little giant 9300

So I've got one chick out but the other two eggs are silent. I'm getting worried that I will end up with a lone chick. I'm going to hope the other two just need a little while longer to get going.

I candled the other two this evening, no movement. Did an eggtopsy and noticed that they were both upside down with unabsorbed yolk sacs.

I'm thinking they must have died right after lockdown and thus never got a chance to position themselves correctly in the egg. I had a couple malpositions in my last hatch too, I think I need to invest in a turner. I can only turn 3 times per day due to my job currently.

So now I have a lone chick again, I may try to find him a home this weekend because he's way too tiny to put in with the 6-week-olds.

@@TheGeekySheep Sorry to hear that. Shipped egg incubation can be really disappointing. I would be half tempted to try to put him with the others when you have time to watch just to see if one of the young hens takes care of him. Wish I was closer, I bet the Silkies would mother him, they take turns sitting on each other.

I'm not letting him anywhere near my hens, one of them is a homicidal broody, that's how I ended up with a lone chick last time, haha.

And my next hatch will be local eggs for sure, that was such a let down. I'm going to try to find local Swedish Flowers because I still love the idea of having lots of color in my flock.

@@TheGeekySheepOh no, mean hen, argh! I agree keep trying, Love the idea of a rainbow flock, that's what I was going for here, wanted one of every color. Going to settle for 3 Buffs, a white and Silver partridge, I think that's what color Liberty is. I'm sitting outside with the two now letting them free range the yard, they keep ending up on the patio under my chair.

Discovery: after much research, apparently one can't buy a fan kit for the 9300 yet. CoopsnMore sells the 9300 with a fan already installed but it doesn't appear that they sell it separately.

@TheGeekySheep. I would try emailing or calling them to see if you could get one, the temperature still fluctuates with the humidity even with the fan. If I was to choose fan or turner, I would go for the turner. It's really been nice not to open it only once a day or so to add a little water. I set mine atop a sturdy laundry basket to increase air flow, since that, turning or humidity was a problem for the shipped eggs. Hopefully if I have a good hatch this time I won't be using it again till spring for Easter chicks. If we lived closer I'd let you use it. Oh and I remember Miller saying they would have them this fall, might try them too.
