Little Giant Hatch Along

Glad you came and joined us. I cleaned mine with soap and water, than I poured some peroxide, on the bottom. I was only able to wipe the top of the incubator down with a rag. I than let it sit all day in the sun. You could also try a bleach/water mix in a spray bottle and clean it with that. I wish I would have done that, but I had no bleach around. The on I am using was stored outside before I got it. So I have had a big problem with bacteria. You can set as many as you want! 8 does sound like a nice number to start with.

You know....that made me think. When our hatches are over I think we need to make sure to wash, disinfect and set in the sun for a day to make sure it is completly dried out before storing. In my case I am setting eggs again, but I will make sure to take as many steps as I can to prevent bacteria.

Thank you bbern & allaboutyoupetsitting!

I will clean it out with the bleach solution this eve. Did you clean the egg turner with the bleach sol. ? I probably will anyway. I'm a big stickler for sanitation when it comes to my chicks!

Yes on the egg turner. With bleach. And I think wash witn soap after to get the bleach off. I have a stainless steel brooder that was given to me and it is out in the driveway now. I sprayed it down with clorox with bleach. After rinsing it I am going to wash and scrub it down with antibacterial soap. Then it will spend the day in the sun (if it will come out) and after I will bring it in the house. Am setting it up next to the incubator to put the chicks in. The big brooder will be in the garage and they will move out there after three days or so. The smaller one will work for at least three days and give me time for the hatch to be over.

But the styrofoam....am going to go look at how to clean it.....maybe a search online????

Going to look at Lysol clean anywhere spray. AND I have one of those floor steam cleaners......am going to clean it up good and use a clean cover on it and steam a little too....that might be the best thing now that I think of it!!!

Well I am getting in late to the party!

This is my first time incubating eggs. I have the incubator and the egg turner. I added a computer fan. My Buff Orpingtons provided me 15 eggs over 3 days, so I started with that. I put them in 3/24/11. On day 10 I candled them. They all showed growth. I did it again on the 4/6/11 and they are all looking good. I have my incubator in a spare bathroom. It has no windows and I turned the a/- heat vent off. The temp has been 99.5-101.5. I don't have a way to check the humidity yet, but keep the resivors full. I use a syringe and tube to get the water down there. I will pull the turner and add a sponge on the 10th and lock it down. We will see what happens!

We go into lockdown this evening and have 15 eggs that are still growing and 2 questionables, so I left them in the bator. Took out 2 eggs last night.

Good Luck with your hatch and post pics of them.

Hello from KS!
This is my first time hatching! I am fashionably late here with 14 standard Cochin eggs on day two in my LG. I installed a computer fan as well. My temp, according to 4 differently placed thermometers, has been steady at 100 degrees. I ran my LG regulated at 100 degrees for three days before adding them. My eggs came all the way from FL. They were packed very well; none broken but one had quite a funky smell. Upon opening the egg I almost lost my cookies at the putrid smell and rottenness! I am amazed and excited as I learn about all of the eggs developments. I hope this turns out well for us as I am already counting my eggs before they're hatched......

We additionally have 3 Silkies and two Blue Andalusians that are juvenile pullets. My husband has almost completed their chicken coop mansion!!

I was thinking about lining the inside of the bator with foil to help with the heat retention, but that would also help with the sanitation issue, I bet. Worth a try.
