Little Giant Incubator Tricks

My brother still lives in Brewer, and college friend in Eastport and mother of course is still in Maine.  On the last visit I was overwhelmed by lonliness as the night was totally silent-- so different here w/  car traffic all the time  . . . .

The silence is deafening! But don't miss the crazy traffic.

So I have yet another ??? Purchased automatic turners and placed in incubator. Now I can't get the temp up. It's turned all the way up and only up to 99.5 @ top of egg height.

Adding the egg turner itself does not affect temperature. However adding a much cooler egg turner midway through incubation will bring down temps in exactly the same way as filling the incubator with room temp eggs. Since your eggs were warm, they would shed a few degrees to the turner, and the heating element would eventually catch up. Be sure you are checking the egg temp, not the temp of a thermometer resting on the turner.

Give it a few days to adapt and see if it gts to the right temp. I do find the LG to be temperamental-- an doesn't adjust easily. That is the challenge of the LG-- keeps me thinking!!! lol

I have heard from others that the turner can cause drops in tempswhen it is removed at lockdown-- but I don't have any personal experience with a turner, as I don't use one.

Wait and see-- the LG teaches patience. lol

Thanks back on track.with temps. Oh I hope I.can have better hatch this time
My HAL.was 2/20...the 2 were my own. The 15 shipped Wheaton/Blue Wheaton yielded nada. So bummed they didn't hatch plus first loss $$$ with.my first shipped batch. Hoping the Turner will.help.and gonna keep a daily journal of everything to see whAt it is I am doing wrong. So 2 different hatches and got 2/44... :(

I learned bunches doing a log-- THe LG is easily influenced by the conditions of the room which is affected by the outside conditions. If it was raining out side, in 2 ddays time the humidity rose inthe LG.

Looking at the thermometer 5 times a day did not show me the trend over a couple days. might be sliding up a degree or down. THen I could make a determination on what to change or NOT, based on the up coming weather pattern.

I'm sure you will do better!! Are youweighing the eggs this time or candling for air cell development??

I candled last time and saw, what I thought was good development. Will do the weights as suggested as well.

Quote: TIming the development of the air cell, with the hatch date of the chick is the name of hte game. Usually take me the first hatch of the season to get to know my LG again. IMO not having a large enough air cell is the cause of many problems . . . this one takes a bit more practice to see by flashlight, or by weighing which takes a bit of math. I expect you will do much better this time.

I hope so!!!

I just wanted to post a thank you to everyone who posted about their experiences with the LG. Thanks to you we hatched 31of 40 eggs our first try! It took a long time to get through the entire thread, but it was well worth it.

Yay!!! I learned new things too. I hope people keep adding comments. I love learning as much as I can about something I love so much. My LG is going in my daughters classroom tomorrow. Wish me luck.
