Little Giant Incubator Tricks

Pics
In regards to the (very early in thread) squeeze bottle with straw I was able to find a straw small enough to fit in my 4 tiny holes and added it to the top of a cake decorating squeeze bottle that was just taking up space in my cuboard. Thanks for the idea!

I finally read through this entire thread. Something that I have found that works for me is one of those thermometers that has a remote sensor for "outside." I put that one in the incubator, and then I can keep the main unit someplace where I can see it often. I don't have to keep going into the room to check on things so the temperature can stay more stable in there.

I use those too. Right now they are in my brooders.

cmom,
I see that you have Little Giant as well as Hovabator incubators. Which one do you like better.? Which one is easier to use? It sounds like you really have to tinker with the Little Giant in order to get good hatches. Are all incubators like that?
I want to get some olive eggers going in the incubator and I'm trying to make a decision as to which one to get.
Thanks!

If I have a small batch of eggs, I usually use the LG. I have made modifications to it which I have posted in this thread that make it easier to use and if I need to get inside I only have to take out one of the viewing windows where with the Hova-Bators I have to open the lid. Most of the time I use my cabinet incubator to incubate in and the styrofoam incubators to hatch in. I would say I use my LG's more. I had put a computer fan in one of my LG's but have since replaced it with an LG fan. I do prefer incubators with fans. I had one still air incubator and one circulated air of each in both the LG and Hova-Bator and in both still airs have put fans. http://www.eggcartons.com/FHP-Incubator-Fan-Kit-p/fhp-ca115fan.htm for my LG. I do have a room that I close off with the incubators so that the temperature and humidity will stay constant. Some people use a closet if they don't have a room they can close up. Good luck and have fun...

I bought the basic unit but modified it, added wire and I put trays under the wire with shaving in it to catch the poop and added the lights for heat. I used ½ x ½ mesh so the poop would go through the wire. For the chicks first couple of days I put paper towel over the wire until the chicks find their legs.

You don't need to add water trays just do what I did

. Get a drinking straw, scissors and glue that's all. Cut from the straw four pieces of 1 3/8 in. glue them(I used a hot glue gun), then insert straw pieces in the ventilation holes. It's a mickey mouse( a word for mexican whey they do shortcut and get it temporarily fixed) from a mexican guy

and now you'll have all the incubator floor to be filled with water. And sorry for my spelling I am still learning.

Cost:
Hot glue gun = .99 cents from .99 cent store
Straw = 0 I grabbed from my baby boy

Total cost = 1.08 dollars tax included

That is a good idea but the holes are for ventilation. I guess I would put some holes in the sides like the Hova-Bators have.
