I finally read through this entire thread. Something that I have found that works for me is one of those thermometers that has a remote sensor for "outside." I put that one in the incubator, and then I can keep the main unit someplace where I can see it often. I don't have to keep going into the room to check on things so the temperature can stay more stable in there.
You don't need to add water trays just do what I didI bought the basic unit but modified it, added wire and I put trays under the wire with shaving in it to catch the poop and added the lights for heat. I used ½ x ½ mesh so the poop would go through the wire. For the chicks first couple of days I put paper towel over the wire until the chicks find their legs.
They will be still working, remember it's a straw and they are little tubes.That is a good idea but the holes are for ventilation. I guess I would put some holes in the sides like the Hova-Bators have.
