hope all goes well

I thought about that, but I am pretty sure that this yolk is attached... if he had already absorbed one, would he try to absorb this one as well?

I have not closely examined the tummy area yet... the smell is not the greatest, to be honest. I am going to give it a few more hours - see if he has indeed been absorbing it.

Try pushing the yolk into the naval, when its close to absorbed rub a little rubbing alchohol around the naval. Im not exactly sure how it works but its helps the naval to close up. You can also try super glue..I use it all the time on cuts on my hands..it might work to keep the naval shut...cause if the chick peeps it will push the yolk sac out again...just don't super glue yourself to a chicks butt. Is the bird even trying to upright itself and walk?

And i would let him dry all that moisture evaperating from his down has got to be cold and will proly kill it if the body temp drops low enough

Hi Cherlyn,

i hope your baby is doing okay. i have had chicks look that bad right after hatching, some not entirely absorbing the yolk sac, and they survived and did fine. As long as he is alive and breathing, there is hope.

One of my first hatches i helped a chick out too soon. He lay there looking terrible for hours. i peeked in the next morning and miraculously he was sitting up. Don't give up hope. Give him at least 24 hours to come around.

*** Any hatching experts out there?!! ***

So, typically the yolk is absorbed before the chick hatches to give them energy for the hatch. And if the yolk doesn't get absorbed, it is usually an indication that it will probably have problems anyway. However, since the hatching process has already been interrupted in this case, is there any reason Cheryln shouldn't just go ahead and give the chick food...maybe sugar water, vitamins, electrolytes or something for energy that the chick would have normally gotten from the yolk?

It just seems that it couldn't hurt since it is so far along anyway... Just thinking AND trying to understand the whole hatching process.

Thanks!

Thanks, all, for your input - this is helping immensely. If this little guy has a fighting chance, I am going to help him survive, however possible.

I am giving him a bit of sugar water, but that is it at this point. I would like to give him more, but I am waiting until he dries a wee bit. I need to dry the humidifier out so he can also dry. I do not have any electrolytes... can I use Pedialyte? How else can I get electrolytes into him?

Photos to come... I am going to closely scrutinize the area to see what to do next. These next photos may be a bit graphic, as well - close-ups - so if anyone is weak-stomached, do not check back.

Good news, I think. There is not much yolk left, and is only attached a little bit. Maybe it will dry up and close on its own... maybe he will absorb the rest... time will tell.

I do not think he has absorbed much of the yolk, unless it was through his pores... I think he may have cut into it with his claws sometime during the night, as the washcloth around him was covered in a thin layer of yolk. But hopefully I can make up for this, if I give him some liquid energy (sugar water, electrolytes).

What am I doing now:

Giving sugar water every few minutes
Replacing washcloth with soft towel, so he can begin to dry

Any thoughts/tips? I am afraid to get my hopes up, but he looks much better than last night.

Any other ways to get his energy up? His energy levels seem low.

What can I do to minimize the chance of infection?

Thanks, all,

The remainder of the yolk seems to have broken, and his bottom/abdomen seems to be soaked in yolk. I am preparing now to rinse his body with warm sterile saline... hopefully I can get him rinsed off and decrease the chance of infection.

He seems a great deal weaker. Still breathing normally, but not much energy.
