What you see in the pic is the piece of shell attached to babies butt. It is the umbillical cord (sp). Pulling it off before it is ready could injure the bird.

The above pic is baby in the brooder with a week old bantam Modern chick that likes to jump into it's seperate area to sun-bathe. It is nice to have another bird show how to drink etc. I also didn't know that the moderns are such good jumpers! Those two are very good friends..

The Modern comes and goes as it pleases.

Wish I would have read this sooner...just had the same issue lastnight...but me thinking like "people medicine" broke the membrane, and turned out to be a chick murdered....if I had only seen this before I could have saved the poor poor thing.....

I am so sorry! I started crying when I found out the poor chicky died. He is probably looking at you now thinking how you put many hard hours into trying to save his life. He came to you to touch your heart, and I am sure he did. Now, all you need is a cup of hot chocolate and a big hug.

Thanks, all... looking back on it, I can definitely say I have learned the hard lesson of not intervening. We will be hatching a few more next month, I think, so that will be the true test of this lesson.
