You may also want to investigate the CHANTICLEER breed of chicken that was developed in Canada to survive severe weather. They have a very flat comb that is highly resistent to frost bite.

Australorps are pretty cold hardy. Where are you located?

I live in a small mountain town in Colorado, it can get below zero for several days in a row but I would think a light would help on those days.
