That's the best part watching them chip away at the shell & hearing them peep. It makes all the worrying worth it.

Hey, thanks again weimarmama!!! But now I have 5 hatched out and another 1 pipping!!! They all were in a hurry to get out. You would look and there was the pip and about an hour later they were zipped and coming out!! The 5 were all out by about 2 this afternoon!! Then we just got home bout 1/2 hr ago and another has pipped!! I want to take the others out as they are all dry and running around like crazy!!!

But if this other one hatches out tonite I don't want it to be alone all nite so I'm not sure what to do!

Maybe wait until morn? I wonder if I should keep a lite on in there? I probably will and cover the windows to keep them settled a little. Decisions, Decisions!!! It's been an eggciting day around here!!! 3 of my grandbabies were here and they were so eggcited to watch them hatch! What a great experience for them!

so I have 28 happy healthy chicks thus far out of 42, I have 9 drying out in the bator. Some I don't think will make it. 4 didn't hatch at all, which is reasonable, and 1 died trying. I have 3 I think I have to cull, ugh. I hate this thought. One for sure. Life can be cruel, to bring something into the world only to take it out right away. seems so unfair.
so...........

this is my last bator run for this year. Taking a break until next year . I am feeling discouraged by the thought of ending lives. Not fun for me, and I chose to hatch them, and now I have to end their little life already. I feel terrible.

overall though, great ratio of viable eggs. My roos are definitely doing their job.

now is their a way to bring the humidity down so that they can dry out, it has shot up to 90% with the 9 drying in their, and they just aren't fluffing up at all, it's only been over an hour, so maybe I'm impatient.

Wow, they were ready to be out

It's fun to watch them when they come out. They're usually all over the place in the incubator moving the other eggs around.

I try to take mine out when there are no more or very few pips. The humidity usually gets pretty high (mine jumped up to 80% after several had hatched) with all of them in there, so it doesn't drop much if you're quick. Someone holds the lid up for me just a little & a box to put the chicks in to carry them in to the brooder. Before we put the lid back on I either spritz a little water on them from a spray bottle or pour a tad bit of warm water in the tray.

With this past hatch, the one that hatched a day after the others was in the incubator by himself & he did fine

We did take him out as soon as we realized there were no more pips, though.

That has got to be the hardest thing to do, but at least they won't suffer anymore & you gave them a chance at life. DF used to get so upset whenever he had to put someone's pet down at work, so I know it is very heartbreaking. I've never had to cull any chickens yet, but I hope I'll be as brave as you & able to do it.
hugs.gif

Take heart, though, that you've got 28 chicks that are doing very well
woot.gif
Didn't you say earlier they were EEs? Those are gorgeous & lay the best eggs
love.gif

It is hard to dry out in there with the humidity so high. If they're getting around good & are as dry as they'll get, I'd take them out since they'll be under a heat lamp.

Thanks. It is heartbreaking, I do what I can for the underdogs, I still have Scooter, my crooked toe baby. A few are up and about, which is good, I have two with very curled under toes, again. Yep, all EE's, I love the variation in colors, that is why I decided to stick with them and get out the purebreeds.
Hoping the humidity will come down soon, I took out the cheesecloth I had down for mess purposes. so hopefully soon, then they can fluff up. I had to wash most of them , sticky chicks. !!
