I have found this past year that BOSS has gone up the highest in price & when I asked my feed dealer, why? his reply was "An acre of corn has become more lucrative as corn prices rise, so farmers who had hundreds of acres of BOSS have now switched to corn for ethanol
This past year I planted about 20 plants of sunflowers (black oil & striped). I use for my bird feeders as well as the hens. Was definitely NOT ENOUGH
The price of Safflower seed has come down (that's the white oval seed most used to attract Cardinals) which is good for me since my chickens prefer Safflower over BOSS anyway
I have found a lot of treats for the wild birds are LOVED just as much by my chickens. They love suet & have a suet feeder hanging in their run. They also love Millet Sprays which my indoor birds eat so I hang them in the run also. I pay $4.99 a lb for huge millet sprays &/or $2.99 for a 5 lb bag of red or white millet (why bagged is cheaper is beyond me
They even enjoy the Black Nyger or Niger/ Thistle (how ever you spell it) which is & has always been expensive
Underneath all my finch feeders the thistle that drops to ground has gone to seed & is growing. They absolutely adore eating those green weeds! I truly wish that the BOSS would come down in price as I remember when I could get a 50 lb bag for $19.99 now it is over $20.00 for a 25 lb bag
I also have noticed when I drive away from shore to the north or southwest where homes w/ acreage had once had lawns they are now cornfields for a lawn, houses are surrounded by corn
Makes me think...has everyone has jumped on the ethanol bandwagon...... hmmm....I guess we will be paying more for our BOSS no matter where in the country we live
Adding a pic of Mama Betty (BO) enjoying her suet after her bumblefoot surgery
