I have just put my eggs into lock down, all 40. The eggs have been incubating in my home made unit. Now I'm a little concerned that they will have trouble getting out of their shells. The 2nd pic below is how they were set up during the first 18 days, and the 1st is how I set them for hatching. There is a small computer fan on the door. The water containers for humidity are on the 2nd level now.

This is only my 2nd time hatching eggs. The first time was in a smaller home made unit (9/12 hatched) and my sister was here to pull out the shells as they hatched. I have to be away at work for 10 hrs when they are supposed to start arriving (Tuesday).

Thanks for discussing and any advice.

What's the temp on the middle shelf and on the bottom in the 2nd pic? Do you or have you calibrated both your thermometer and hygrometer?
Only concern I can see is the chicks getting caught between the shelves and the door and in the holes you have in the shelves or falling out when you open the door.
They will be fine in the bator or hatcher while your at work.

They are on the bottom now, no cracks or holes. I'm still waiting for the temp to stabilize after moving and pics.

Good, I was going to recommend moving them to the bottom but I'd check the temp and humidity at that level before doing so, if you can do it, the water containers should be where the fan can blow across them, you get better evaporation (humidity).
