Lockdown and small aircells

Girly, I hope everyone just karate chops out and looks ready to rumble, because you don't need any more of this nonsense!!

I'm telling you- I NEVER look at my humidity or add water days 1-18. My cheat-sheet says it all. I want them to evaporate, because that gives them room to maneuver when it's time to bust out and do little dances for me.

I liked using the cardboard egg carton for turning, but had problems with it. My first hatch was in May. I had 6 eggs. The egg carton absorbed the moisture, causing it to get wet and flimsy. Only one egg hatched... my speckled sussex rooster that I have. This is my second time, no egg carton. The reason for that is one of the eggs is a double yolker that doesn't fit in the carton, and I don't want to risk lack of air cells for any chicks that may develop in it. So my eggs are all on the wire screen. I had to fight to get the humidity up before putting them in, but now it's good. Eggs went in this morning, temp and humidity are stable. I only put four other eggs in with the double yolker, so hopefully we'll get a reasonably good hatch. Our hatch date is Feb. 20th. 2 days before my daughter's 4th birthday. lol What a great present for her! (if all goes well, that is) Good luck with your babies! I will be watching this thread to see what happens.

1- LOVE the el cheapo thermometers- the ones that are exposed to humidity stop being consistent!

2- I do use paper towels, and yes, the top one is damp. It has never made any negative impact, and the wet spot lets me see to put it back without turning it if I'm bad and candle during lockdown.

I have mine laying on their sides on the towel itself.

3- I prefer not to use cartons but use a different incubator so putting them lower doesn't cause a temp shift, BUT when I have to use the same one, I'll use cardboard cartons, as I want them to absorb some of the moisture- they release it, too. If you have them on the paper towel, it works in tandem as a humidification system.

I have seen others use the foam cartons. I haven't but once, and I can't say it made any real difference. I definitely would encourage you to cut the bottoms off of the cartons for circulation, but other than that, I can't say it'd be an issue for them to be tight in the carton. The important thing is to make sure they're approximately the same height from the wire as in the turner.

I wonder- were these eggs super-fresh? Sometimes that can lead to small air-cells. When I have small air-cells, I'll leave the humidity low until day 20. I know that sounds awful, but it works for me.

They are all shipped eggs. Some I can't see for diddly, like the FBCMs

I have 48 eggs ready to go in the bator I got from Lotsapaints and I won the raffle for Maransa eggs at the Stockton show yesterday, also got one from a 1st place BV AM.

OK I'm doind it this way. Using the same bator, Paper towels in the reseviour with water, cardboard cartons so they stay the same distance, Do you check humidity at all during lockdown? I have a needle that my husband had given me for this. It's an old out of date thing with a needle that just to look at says OUCH! They used to use this type for spinals. Works great for a top load bator. Goes right through the plug hole and all the way to the reseviour with room to spare. I love this thing.

Anything I'm missing?

Wonder why I've had all this trouble for so long? I may not get 100% ever again, but a 70% would be nice after all these months.

It all sounds good! I want a big ol' hypodermic for that!!

I really don't check humidity anymore- It's usually just fine when I do the paper towel thing, so I quit worrying about it.

I have 3 LGs going right now and my Rcom is full 2 layers high, with top layer hatching right now. I have to plug in the HovaBator soon because I have another 30 odd eggs to load up...unless I get more auctions up!

I hope this gets me out of my slump. Gonna try something new after decades.

I did lockdown. I have some dark ones, so iffy, but 9 out of 22. Not great, not bad.

It will get better when my girls start laying again. I get great hatches from my own eggs.

Appreciate your help.

BTW I candled and only a couple of cells looked really small today, so I may just be worrying for nothing.

After the NYD hatch I think I'm gun shy.
