LOCKDOWN--I HAVE PIPS!- Hatch Date 9/22/09ish

Hi Laree! I'm the one you pmed about the local eggs... I found some down south of me and picked them up yesterday. I, too, set them last night. It's fun to have a more local person to share hatching with! Where did you get your maran eggs from?

Take care!

Yall are lucky. I am so ready to hatch eggs again. I want a hundred chochin eggs but parents wont allow anymore right now. Darn!!! Goodluck with yalls eggs

Chrystal-

I ended up doing the ebay-thing. I have done two batches now from shipped eggs. One did ok 67% and one semi-poor 1 out of 6.

But...Batch #2 happened to be on day 18 the ONE DAY A YEAR it rains here, so I pumped up the humidity, cllouds roll in, and all the sudden the air cells were filled with water. One egg exploded on day 17-18: eeeeewwwww. It infected the others, and things went down hill from there.

So- I got 12 cuckoo marans+ extras, and all 14 made it.

I also set 16 pharaoh quail eggs last night. I got those from the guy on craigslist I told you about. He's a counselor at Moon Valley HS, and said he'd trade me eating eggs for any hatch survivors. I think his chicken eggs may be fertile too, so when you are ready, I can send you his email or him yours.

I also found a guy on ebay that lives in Hereford that has cuckoo marans, but the MIL JUST LEFT from a 3-week visit, so I wan't in any hurry to go visit her

chickenchick12-

My eggies all popped on that monday, the 23rd(?). I posted results and pics on our thread. In the end I got 2 sizzles (one with funny toes) and 2 OEGBs. Batch #2 had 1 of 6, who popped yesterday morning.

I am officially set. Everything was candled prior to insertion and no cracks in the shipped ones or the fresh ones! Yolks highly visible on all except one, the shell was just too splotchy to tell for sure... from my hen.

Oooo! Who did you get your quail from? Are they standard size or the jumbos? I really want some jumbos! I'm actually thinking of ordering some Texas A & M quail eggs the end of the week. I'm not sure how well they will ship/hatch, but I'd like to give it a try. I've also been thinking about the Jumbo Browns, too. But, I think I'm going to give the A & M a try first.

I'm sorry to hear about your bad hatch. It's the nature of shipped eggs unfortunatly... I have a batch due tomorrow that were 2 orders that arrived at the same time. One had 14 eggs and I only have 3 embryos. The second was a batch of 21 and I have 13 that are still going. Not too bad for shipped eggs. I also just ordered 2 dozen Welsummer eggs that should be arriving on Saturday. I am super excited about those. I decided that I better order lots to make sure I get a good amount of survivors, but if I have a ton hatch you may see an ad on CL from me! LOL...

Feel free to PM me the info from the guy with the quail and hatching eggs.

Thanks! Best of luck with your hatch!!!!

I have no idea which size quail they are! I just wanted to hatch them! ---I TOTALLY have a sickness!---- I suspect they are standard size pharaoh quail (cortunix). The eggs seemed about the size the pharoahs you see at the feed store would produce. But, I don't know. I also suspect a standard quail is still smaller than I might think.

I only went forward with hatching them because they guy said he'd buy/trade some back. I don't think the DH would be too pleased if he had to build a quail run too.

SO- if you want some quail, I should have some chickies rather soon. They mature really quickly so you can get your own eggs... I am also going to be selling chickens on CL. There are at least 4 roosters in the 8-week-olds. I will probably be sending a few to freezer camp. I even asked the butchers at Sprouts today if they had any experience...got a number of another butcher. Oy...

ANYWAY, I have hijacked my own thread.

I will be good now and go turn my eggies.
