Lockdown in 2 days

Do you have a thermometer under the light? Should be about 95 there for the first week, 90 the second week, 85 the third week...and so on until you get to room temp.

The other side of the brooder where the food and water is should be room temp...like 70 degrees.

Make sure they get fresh air but no drafts.

The only chick I had that was on its side was my very first chick that I fried under the heat lamp. He was dead 9 hours later.

For the first week I grind up the food so it's more of a flour consistency.

They should all be eating. If not, check the temps in your brooder.

Cleaning the incubator I used the Brinsea disinfectant solution. Or even water and dish soap & vinegar

Ok so I have a thermometer In there which sais 99 trying to get it down a bit. Here is a picture. You said fresh air hut no drafts? Is this fine.?

Mike, that is too warm. Try a smaller watt bulb or back the light away a little.

Do you have a screen you can put over the top? The towel may inhibit proper air flow.

You don't want to bake them or freeze them.

I did back it up I was messing with it and now have it going between 93 and 95.. the towel is on top of a screen

Mike,

That's a good temp for them. DId everyone survive the night?  or do you still have two chicks in there doing the backstroke?

Yes everyone has survived the night. I try show them all where the food is. Only 3 go for it. Idk if others have when I'm not looking. But when I out some on my hand they all run to it jump on it stepping all on the food trying to get comfortable to eat. Cutest little things ever. They peck at each other from time to time I have to stop them lol

And I cannot tell who is the one who had a crooked neck. It wasn't like bad. It was a slight crook but now u can't tell. There all fine. Thank you. How are your chickens?

Mine are 9 days old now. All are good, except the 2 late hatches. A Polish with a splayed leg that I am gradually pulling tighter and tighter, and a Maran with crooked toes. She is the one I helped out. She's wearing her "sandals", and my wife has named her Cobbler. She's a runt, but she is the sweetest chick I have ever had. Loves to be held, cries when you put her down. I have moved all of the heathy ones to the outside brooder, but I am keeping these 2 inside until they can run with the pack, although Cobbler may learn to wear a diaper

Set 20 Marans and 4 Polish Friday night, so I will be looking at round 2 around Feb.6-7. Trying a little lower humidity during the first 18 days this time. I have also debated using the cooldown feature, just to compare it to the last hatch, but haven't set it yet

Sc...I am using the cool down feature. Next week will be the first to hatch with it. I find though that the humidity increases when the temp drops. Don't know if I am comfortable with that!

@mike...glad you are doing well. Sometimes the neck thing is just a lack of vitamins and minerals...! Glad it is doing well!

Let me know how you like it. I think I'm going to wait until next time to try the cool down. Last time my pips were a little close to the ends of the eggs. I incubated at 40-42%. I'm trying to maintain 35% this time, just to experiment. My house is so dry this winter that I'm not brave enough to try the dry incubation. I was so happy with the performance of the Octagon that I just ordered 2 Eco glow 20s and the Brinsea candler without the scope

Sc...will do! I am running at 53% day 1-18. The breeder I got the eggs from runs 55% day 1-18 and 65% at lockdown. I tried 30%,,45% and dry hatch in the past. Didn't work for me. I need a few broody silkies!!! They are like 3 months old :(

I will tell you how things go.

I have 2 of the eco glow 20's... They are AMAZING! Chicks love them. I love them . We are all happy and no one gets cooked!

I have the candler too. I bought the classroom pack.
