Number 5 finally made it. He keeps opening his beak real wide. Not continuously but a lot. Noticed he was doing this even after hatching. Anybody elses chick do this?

Congrats and yes I noticed one of my chicks doing this today not sure why though I thought he was just yawning lol

First time hatching chicks, today was the day! Came home to this little one! Dad is a Barred Rock, and mom could be a barred rock, a RIR or an australorp. From a brown egg. Have since had two others hatch, and now a silkie is almost out!

Well I'm feeling pretty sad today one of my baby chicks died lastnight ;-( it was my only white one and I have no idea what happened she was just laying down with her legs up in the air! All the others look fine but I cleaned and disinfected their cage and put all fresh bedding in just incase. Fingers crossed I don't loose any more as it's heart breaking ;-(

I'm the same lol I leave them all in till the hatch is completely over

I do because of such a lower hatch when I opened. I figure it must have to do with location----humidity because some open at will with good hatches----some open at will and help the eggs hatch-----I have hatched 1000's and 1000's with close perfect hatches. Example's----my last hatch was a few peachick eggs----100%, my hatch before was 233 out of 236, but the 3 eggs that did not hatch were marked----I was humoring my 80 yr old Mother that said They Might Hatch---I said they "want" but we will mark them and put them in there and they didn't---LOL. I might have to break out a couple some times that are slow hatching----but I have great hatches.

I had a woman in Canada that ask me Private mail how she could have better luck/hatch %---she open some during the hatch. I told her I would help if she would do as I say needs to be done---she agreed. She just sent me a e-mail a couple days ago---61 out of 64 hatched---she was so excited----she had to put them in lock-down a day early because of going out of town(I told her that would not hurt) ----she open and removed them on day 22--Great hatch-----I Love helping People that are willing to listen!!

Sorry to hear that.

There's nothing more frustrating than someone asking for help, but not taking a thing you say into consideration! And not everything works for everyone. Not everyone can get away doing things the same way. Just because I have high hatches and open my bator frequently, if someone is loosing a lot of chicks, and everything seems to be on track, the first thing I'd say is well, try it with being hands off. If rates come up, that's great. If not, you can rule that out. A lot is trial and error, but if someone who is asking for help won't even try any of your suggestions, it's pointless to waste your time,
