lone duck egg hatching NOW..advice needed please

i helped him because i could see there was no way he would ever have reached the shell, to externally pip, plus he's been a little miracle so far, being the only egg out of 6 to even develop...i just didn't want to risk him dying in the shell

yes in hindsight i can see that i DID remove too much shell, but that was mainly because i could see the membrane shrink wrapping round him and i panicked

his eyes are still closed..i'm not touching them anymore. i only wiped them the once. i said to my hubby it's as if his skin's too baggy underneath his eyes, and that's why he can't open them lol! and he needs to grow into it!

he fluffed up a few hours ago, and i've put him in the brooder now

i rolled a towel up so he can't wriggle further than about 8" from the heat pad (its a brinsea eco glow brooder pad)

and he's got a purple dinosaur soft toy for company!

i'm trying to let him sleep as much as possible, but i peek in the box every 20 mins or so to check he hasn't wriggled away from the heat pad, without waking him

and i managed to drip a couple of drops of raw egg yolk into his beak, and a couple of drops of water every couple of hours

he must be getting stronger cos he shakes his head when i dip it in the water, and sprays it everywhere! he's holding his head up more now, and he's desperately trying to stand up, but still can't

Great that fee fluffed up... don't feed it or water it right now that's going to exhaust him more at this in this situation... get him feed starter for ducks and when he's ready he'll eat and drink on it's own. ..he has lots of yolk that will mmaintain him for a couple of days... the aircell in the hatching rgg is SUPPOSED to be big..... every egg we and everyone hatch has a big air cell.. run a search on the development of chick embryo and you'll see how the air cell gets bigger with time because when gets bigger he needs more oxygen.... now keep him warm and update us on it's improvement ...

its good he has fluffed up e proble hasn't walked becouse he cant see are his eyes open yet and with the brooder make sure its in a warm place becouse i had chicks with my brinsea brooder and they all died couse it was to cold make sure its warm enough tho they died in febary and it was very cold i didnt no it had to be in a warm room

when i got up this morning about he's crawled out from under his heat pad. i'd built a rolled - up - towel - barrier about 6" from it as well,in case he did that, and he was really cold

still alive, but really cold

i held him for a few seconds, rubbing him, but he's not very responsive, and i tried to get a drop of sugar water into him, and i've put him back under the heat mat, but i don't hold out much hope for him

i read bad things about heat lamps, that's why i went with the pads

i've been getting sugar water and drips of raw egg yolk in him every hour or so and he's perking up...or at least i hope he is

and when i talk to him, he's cheeping

his eyes aren't open properly yet, but i can see they're trying to! i can see a hint of a pupil when i hold him

going out to get some brewers yeast to add to his water, as i've been reading that that should give him a boost

trust me there's nothing bad about heat lamps they have the same chance of going on fire as a normal light bulb it's dry heat so it wont catch anything on fire its impossible unless it explosed whice any ligth can explode it 1 in a million chance any light with explode trust me i had the pad and i had 6 chicks ever night 2 chicks died until they where all dead i didn't no what was rong but then i fiquired it out when i ask a man up my street he told me to get a heat lamp becouse it better they have a hard time finding the heat from a pad and there is bearly any heat i said what if it goes on fire he said it dry heat its impossible unless it explodes he usese about 10 heat lamps all day and night its good he opened his eyes is he walking yet.

no, he's not walking yet

i don't hold out much hope for him to be honest, but i'm giving him drips of water and egg yolk every hour or so

he's laid on his tummy, but he can lift his head, and he can drag himself around a little bit!

i'll keep on trying with him tho,of course i will....he'll give up before i do!

its working again i can send on this tread he seems very lethargic make sure the room temperture dosnt drop below 10 or 15 degreese celseas at nigth or he will die of the cold and usually the brooder mat is used for more then one chick/duckling where they can huddel together to be honest he looks cold to me becouse he still has small bit of wet down and the way his legs look like there not heathed enough to walk usually noting likes opening there beak involintarily if you rub his head softly but a small bit fast he migth open his beak
