I’m not sure if I’m posting in the right place or not. We had 2 rescued ducks, 5 year old males. We just lost one to illness. We don’t want another duck. We do have chickens and our duck lives with our chickens. I am home most of the time and can spend time with the animals. This particular duck is very timid, he’s a KC. We are concerned about him being lonely. He sleeps in one of the coops with one of the roosters but was extremely bonded to our other duck. If we rescue another duck then there is no guarantee that they will get along and we will once again be in a situation of having another animal. We are wanting to downsize as the animals pass away. Do you think he may start to bond with me since I am around him all the time? Any suggestions? Do you think he will be ok? We just spent a thousand dollars last spring putting in a permanent pond for them. We let him out in our fenced yard daily along with our chickens. We would even bring him indoors if he wanted that but he is just so timid. Thank you.

Ducks really do need to be with other ducks to be happy and not lonely. If you don't want to get another duck, would you consider rehoming him to a place where he can be happy with other ducks?

I really don’t want to rehome him. We take very good care of him. Without sounding cavalier, most ducks and chickens aren’t cared for as well as ours are. I just want to know if he can be happy. Can he bond with me if need be?

Why are you keeping a single drake in with your chickens ?
Now that your drake has no duck he’ll start trying to mate with your hens and since drakes have a different sexual organ than roosters have he could end up killing them.

As said above get another duck or get rid of him.
