The IMDb synopsis says the family land was on Kauai... It was all sort of wilderness, beautiful.
I just looked up the "coffee place" to see about getting my machine serviced and the first image that came up was a photo of a coffee plantation on Kauai....
Isn't it strange how that happens? (ordinarily you probably wouldn't even notice it, but when it's just been mentioned in another context you do.)
(wonder what the airfares cost? :D)
I think you're right. I think it was on Kauai now that I think about it. I have never been there and looked into moving there, but jobs are few realestate/rentals thru the roof!

All of the locations were beautiful. You get so many movies set in (say) New York or somewhere "city-ish), it was just noticeable how lovely the locations were - it's one of the main things that's stuck with me about the movie.

We have many places on the Big Island that look like that! Air fare is cheapest in September, October. Once it gets near thanksgiving then thru the middle of January, fares double and more! Spring break, any holidays..stay away! I am flying round trip to Chico, Ca. for a little over $600 ($484 with my airline miles) and that is because of the time of year, and from Hi to mainland back to HI cheaper. If I could have waited a month I can usually go to Ca. for under $500 once the kids are back in school and family's stay home.

Aloha. My family has made many trips to Hawaii - I'm afraid of planes & just about every other mode of transportation ,so have never been there(or really anywhere).

Nice to have you back- we kept the light on for you.:frow
Awww gee! I have a friend in Ohio who refuses to fly also. She finally did at 52 and went to Aruba...she is so glad she's over it! Valium, liquor, sleep meds..do what you have to do and come!

They are filming more movies and series in Hawaii because Hawaii gives the film companies a huge tax break now. I loved the movie '50 first dates! The locals were just the way people here are!

They film a lot here in Australia, too, for similar reasons. A lot of the graphics/animation work for the "superhero" type movies is done here.
I think I saw "50 First Dates" on tv, but can't remember much about it.

Aloha seadrift welcome back. I used to have friends on your side of the island. Don't know if any are still there or even alive. I met my wife on Oahu .Long time ago. She raised calves for the meadow gold dairy there . Been to the big island a few times . Been back in Tennessee for 33 years now . Her sister still lives there somewhere . You know how it is with in laws . I don't keep up with them . I miss the islands some times . Last there in 1982 just for a month to get my wife and Island hop to see my friends . We had a friend who lived on the Kona side high up in a little shack in the coffee trees. Most people don't know you can see the curve of the planet there. I used to love to visit them and spend the night just for the morning view . I wonder about my friends all the time .I guess if we had cell phones I would have kept in touch . I'd like to think it is much the same as when we were there although SIL has told us how Oahu has changed. I really hope they haven't ruined the big island as well . Back to chickens . I have Marans Sliver and Gold laced Wayndottes Ameraucanas Cream Legbars and EEs one Lavender Orp. rooster that I'm crossing with some Marans pullets to see what they look like . It makes life interesting . Also makes for a lot of work . It sounds like you stay pretty busy too. I never thought about chickens when I was there . Friends in the country had them and yes there was country on Oahu then. Not sure about now .I've been on BYC only a couple of years and am so hooked I can't leave :lau I have made friends that are just awesome and have met a couple of those in person and hope to met more . Who would've thought an old man like me would make friends on a chicken web site :frow

I think I joined several years ago, but life is so busy, haven't been back for a few years. I manage a big ranch and don't even remember what day it is sometimes (thought today was friday, but yea! an extra day to get stuff done!)
I live on the Big Island of Hawaii where their is a very large population of feral and abandoned chickens. There are a mix of the true Jungle Fowl (small, lean, wild and mean), escaped or
abandoned, fighting fowl, and domestic chickens, escaped or abandoned.
You cannot 'give' away roosters, so they are let go at Lowe's, Home depot, safeway, costco (you get the picture). We recently got a feed store on the leeward side of the island, so now many purebred chickens are being imported.
My flock consists of Araucanas, Ameraucanas, a silver laced wyandotte, Maran, and several purebred mixes. I keep hens only and have raised a couple 'jungle fowl' but the eggs were small and they always turned vicious when any new hen was introduced, cornering her, holding her down and ripping chunks of flesh out, so back to the jungle and done with that.
I have about a dozen hens and they are all named and most are very tame. Just a few nights ago I was stuck in the hen house for nearly an hour because two 'new' girls were afraid of the older hens and decided I was a safe and warm roost to spend the night! How do you dump them off and say
"good luck girls, hope you are still in one piece in the am!" when you have two hens all cuddled up and sound asleep on your lap! I put in a separate roost for them and kept checking them till I was sure all was o.k.
When people leave the island, then tend to just dump whatever animals they can't find homes for when they run out of time, so the island is overrun with feral cats and chickens. My friend and I (mostly her) rescued over 20 abandoned hens up in the jungle at 4000 ft. this last week. All purebreds, young, and looked fat and well cared for...they were just starving. I took some, she took some and we are finding homes for the rest.
It's always summer so we don't have to worry too much about heat. It can get cold, rainy and windy at times, but they have a safe dry coop to sleep and lay eggs in. I dump my grass clippings in and give them two fresh papaya every day from the trees they 'started' by pooping out seeds all over the property. Several different varieties! The papaya seeds keep them free of worms and are high in antioxidants (good for people too!) Today they are enjoying a half of watermelon I let get too ripe.
gosh so sorry for the dumped chickens, its great your doing what you are for them, but just a heads up about the grass clippings if they are long like over 3 inches , long grass can kill a chicken it blocks up their digestive system , by becoming a big tangles ball or something like that , but i am guessing if the grass is short like 1 to 2 inches that may be ok..? i feed sprouted barley & wheat to my hens for the freshly grown green they need, since i live in Arizona, just the opposite of were you live so lush and green ,so i started growing fodder grass for my hens from the same grain seeds, but was worried about the length of the grass, so now i feed the barley & wheat in the sprout stage which ive read was actually more of a pure protein in the sprout stage then the grass stage so i make a bucket full of sprouts and toss it out to my flock of 75 every day , so just a heads up about the length of the loose grass can cause a kind of starving to death , if i remember correctly is what i read . but hey thanks i didn't even know it was friday  :p so i just checked my pc :caf & yeah hey its friday all right  HA & i have a lot to get done before the week end :th o_O good luck & take care & welcome back..! :woot :highfive: :thumbsup :frow:goodpost:
