Long growth strange. Help.

What the heck is this? This is a top view, so you can’t see the length, but it is thin and about 1/4 to 1/2 inch long. Located just above the tail. I’m thinking abscess, but I’ve never see a long skinny one above the skin. And, do chickens get those?

That is the oil or preen gland. All chickens have them, and they touch it with their beaks and distribute oil all over there feathers.

Really? This is the first time I have ever seen it and I check them for mites and bugs all the time. Thanks! At least now I know it’s normal.
