Hi Long Island!

I'm here in Huntington. I'm getting my first ever babies in 2 weeks..I can't wait. I don't see much talk about LI, so it's nice to know someone is out there. I'll check in frequently to see replies and we can swap ideas and concerns.

Hi LIchick,

It's nice to know you're close. What kind of chickens do you have....or are they all silkies? I'm getting 10 Bantam chickens the week of 9/13...3 will be buff brahmas, 3 easter eggers and the other 4 can be anything, so maybe I'll have a silky too. I think they're so cute. How long have you had chickens?

I Have Silkies And One Old Frizzle Girl About 9 Yrs Old. I'm Into Chickens For About 9 Years Now. Let Me Know If I Can Help With Any Thing Or Are Looking For A Specific Type Of Bird. There Are Lots Of Chicken People Around L.i.

Hi LIchick,

9 years....wow. I'm just starting. I've been reading so much that my head is spinning. Every time I think I know something, I read something else that contradicts it. I think I have the brooding thing down, and figured that I'd wait 4 or 5 months for the next stage...laying, layer food etc. I'm so confused, so I'm taking one step at a time.

I'll definitely come to you for questions, if that's ok.

Do you find that we have winters bad enough to require heat in the coop?

I Have A 8x6 Shed That I Made Into A Coop. I've Added Windows For Ventilation & Sun In The Winter. Unless You Have Chicks I Wouldnt Use Heat Lamps. The Birds Will Get Acclimated As The Weather Changes & Heat Can Start Disease. Maybe If It Went To Single Digets But I Never Did. It Would Also Depend On The Size Of The Coop That They Are Roosting In. I Give Scratch In Cold Weather. I Do Staple 3 Mil. Plastic Around The Run But Leave One Side Open For Ventilation. I Have Some Good Poultry Magazines That You Can Have That Are Helpful.

My chicks will be 10 weeks old on Dec 1st. Do you consider them to still be chicks then? It'll be about highs 45 and about 30 at night. What do you think? Too cold for 10 week olds?

I did read that scratch in the winter before they go to bed makes them warm and the 3 mil plastic around the run sounds like a great idea. Better than a tarp. My run will have a slanted roof so that the rain and snow slides off. What do you put on the ground in your run? I seen so many ideas and read so many things that go wrong.

Thanks for offering the mags...My SIL is giving me some older mags and maybe a subscription, what mags do you have? Maybe it's the same? I just subscribed to Hobby Farms.

They should be fine but listen to weather reports & use your judgement. Never say never right! I have a dirt run with old pool couping (stone) around the outside floor. The magazines are back yard poultry, practical poultry & hobby farms. They are old ones too from 08 & up but the info is still good

Hi,

I'm a video journalist for Verizon Fios1 in Long Island, NY. I'm interested in doing a story on backyard chicken keepers on Long Island and came across the backyard chickens site and was told to look for LI members here. Was wondering if I could talk to some LI members as a possible subject for my segment. The show I work for is called Push/Pause. It's a community television magazine show that airs on Fios1 several times a week. Please let me know if any of you would be interested or have any information. Look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks

I lived on the Island for 23 years and moved to the country 5 years ago we were not able to have chickens where we lived on LI Hi everyone!
