Long spur on hen

I've used these.

You can use the dremel. Just be careful of it heating up. Go in short bursts so the friction doesn't burn her.

It looks like she recently shed part of it so just do a little at a time to avoid a major cut into the quick? Total brain fat on what it's called.

Most hens can grow spurs but may not. My hens have the whole backyard to run, dig, sun bathe. I lock them up at night. I put fences around some of my plants since the love orchids, succulents, etc. They get left over fruits and veges that the parrots don't eat as well as pellets.

Thanks I will look for those. That makes me think I could probably use my small dremel.
I have used a dremel to trim spurs. Some don't like the vibration of it. The spur is basically a giant thick toenail.
I'm not for the potato method. It looks brutal. But how you handle trimming back the spurs depends on how much time you want to spend and how well the bird handles it.
Ideally trimming slowly so the quik has time to recede is nice. Unless the bird is stressed being handled all the time. Makes us people feel good that we aren't hurting them physically but the bird isn't exactly happy.
The other option I see is to use the dremel with a cut off wheel. At high speed it should help cauterize the quik as you cut. Yes it will hurt initially and bleed some but it will be a quick process that doesn't need repeated for quite some time. So possibly less stress to the bird.
That's my 2 cents anyway.
