Hello all! I have had a few chickens for about 3 years, and my flock has just doubled in size. My older hens are a speckled sussex, a RIR, a gold sex-link, and a bantam/ameraucana cross. The new additions are 10+ weeks old; one barred rock roo, 2 that were supposed to be buff orpingtons but that i suspect are likely leghorns, and a probable ameraucana. I have a post in the "what is it" section for opinions on the last 3 :) I have been referencing the forum and site for several years, but this is the first time I've posted. Also: Big shout out to Cackleberry Cam from your friendly neighbor :)
Thanks all!

My gold sex-link is sadly getting to the point where I think she's about done. I got her at about 2 years old from a neighbor and she has laid every single day since, year round! She has recently been skipping several days a week and her eggs are getting extremely brittle when she does lay. Poor thing is about layed out I think!

That's too bad but fortunately they are readily available. Gold Sex Links are technically Red Sex Links, produced by crossing a red rooster (RIR, NH, or Production Red) with a white/silver hen (RIW, WR, or Delaware) which produces chicks that can be sexed at hatching (males are whitish, females are reddish). Hatcheries market them under a lot of different names (Red Sex Link, Red Star, Brown Sex Link, Gold Sex Link, Golden Buff, Cinnamon Queen, Bovans Brown, Amber White, Golden Comet, Hubbard Golden Comet, Isa Brown, Shaver Brown, Babcock Brown, Warrens, Bovans Goldline) but they are all essentially the same bird and are all egg laying machines. There is also a Black Sex Link which is a RIR x Barred Rock. The male chicks are black with a white spot on their heads, females are solid black. They are also laying machines, and in my personal experience a little friendlier and calmer than the Red Sex links.
