So update on the chicks!!!
Three days into our new adventure.....Wilson (family dog) decided he wanted a 6 piece chicken nugget meal we were all very upset.
My husband took the kids out to get replacements.
We now have 20 chicks!!! RIR, Ameraucana, and Black sexlink.

I have become partial to one of the Ameraucana (to cute for words!) I have named her Mrs Potts (after the teapot in Beauty and the Beast, If she could talk I know she would have a British accent so I talk to her with a British accent)
The kids make sure all the chicks are handled often and I think they like the attention. I always make a clicking sound with my mouth when I interact with them and use their names often when I am holding them. When I went to feed them last night I opened door, called "Mrs. Potts" and made clicking noise a few times and she came right to me and perched on my hand! The other chicks ran to other corner lol.
Is it luck ...or am I training a chicken?

So sorry about the losses - that is, unfortunately, not at all uncommon if/when a dog gains access to birds, especially little ones. With a little time and training hopefully Wilson can learn that chickens are friends, not food, but a good barrier is going to be your flock's best friend.
As for Mrs. Potts - not luck or chance at all. You are, indeed, training your bird. It doesn't take long for them to figure out where the bread is buttered and who their "friends" are. Lap chickens/shoulder chickens are the best!
