Look at my buttons!!

Only males get red/rust/pink vent feathers, but not all the boys do. Certain colors don't get those.

I've kept some of mine together for years, ever since they hatched. But I did have problems with feather picking on their backs.

One of my cinnamon females died today.

Last night the cat jumped on top of the quail cage and broke the top my fiance had made for it (wood and poultry netting). So instead I put a towel over until he fixed the top today.

Well- she got out in the night somehow. I found her this morning, bloody and featherless on the floor. The dog must have got her. My entire living room floor had feathers everywhere. It was the saddest thing. I've had abroken heart all day about it. She was my favourite out of the four, she had this funky hairdo and her feathers stuck up in spots. SHe'd spend hours on top of the little wooden structure we made them. Sometimes she'd chase off anybody who dared to jump up. She was cute.

I'm very sad she is gone. I'm very attached to these little guys.

I'm sorry! Perhaps he can fashion a solid wood top for you, so that this doesn't happen again?

It was. The top was sturdy wood pieces with poultry netting over it. The quails could boink up all they wanted and it wouldnt hurt them. If only the cat didnt want to come up with new and interesting places to sleep all the dang time.

The only thing about the top is he used nails and he is going to do it with screws instead, and also put a cross bar in the middle to support dumb cats weight should she decide to do this again.

Thank you. It was pretty traumatic. Thankfully there are people on here who understand.

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to sound critical. I was suggesting that he might be able to make a lid out of solid wood -- like plywood. Obviously, it will need ventilation, so would need holes drilled or screening over small areas. I was thinking that if kitty jumped up on solid wood it might be safer.

Again, no offense was intended. I am so sorry you lost a bird this way.
