We have a red-star hen that is the sweetest, friendliest bird ever. She's really more like a dog, she follows us every where. She loves to help me garden and pull weeds. She is the most prolific egg layer I've ever had, doesn't slow down in winter (we don't use a light), lays about 5-6 eggs/week, and her eggs are huge. You can really tell the difference when you put the eggs in a egg carton. You can't put 12 in a carton... they are too crowded and the lid won't shut. The funniest part of it is that she's a tiny little bird and she's certainly not the prettiest we have. Her personality more than makes up for her scrawniness. We love the breed so much we got 12 chicks this year, we know when our little Sahara goes she won't be replaced by any of them but we're really hoping some of her character traits show up in them.
So that's what I'll have to look forward to. Cool! Right now they're living in a kiddie pool in the downstairs bathroom. I was going to put them in the sunroom but it's so cold ( it got down to 0 last night, are we sure it's spring?) and it's unheated and I didn't want to chance it after they got chilled on the ride home yesterday and then waiting in a box for me to set up their digs. Better safe then sorry.
In my first year of raising chickens, I had the FRIENDLIEST gold sex-link that I lost to a predator. Right now, I have one GSL chick that I bought to raise up with the Speckled Sussex chicks that I hatched. She seems to be one of the friendliest of the chicks, so I am hoping she grows up to have the same temperament that Henny Penny did. I think you will love your flock! ......and you don't have to worry about any roos popping up!
