Look at what I found when I opened the coop this morning!

Oh I am so sorry about your loss. I have heard that snakes will if a hen is broody cover the head of the hen to smother her to get to the eggs, if she gives it fight. I have heard that spreading sulphur around, moth balls and there is even something called snake away, but the only problems is that the rain will wash it away if you spread it around the perimeter. and on the inside the moth balls could get eaten by the chickens.

Wow! What kind was it? Hopefully no more come back!

I just call them black snakes. They aren't poisonous, but they can make one hurt themselves. lol... someone called it a black racer, but not to sure and I hope that none come back. I am leary when I go out there now. I mean I know they are around but it doesn't bother me unless I see one and then I freak out. lol

That is just gross, I would have screamed too. UGGHH, I hate snakes. We have bull snakes here that do help keep the rattlesnakes away. I know that some day I will go out to the coop and find a snake...I keep a shovel right outside their yard gate, just for the purpose. I did see one of my cats with a mouse the other day, they do a pretty good job of keeping the mice and other rodents away so their is now draw for the snakes to come in, but since we got the chickens, I have just been waiting. I know they serve a purpose in the circle of life, but I would be fine if my circle was more of an oval because it was missing snakes!
