Look at what I found when I opened the coop this morning!

It got its head caught up in the netting so it choked itself. I don't care for snakes but I hate to see something like this happen to one. they keep the copperheads away. I haven't really noticed any change in my chickens but I have noticed a decrease in eggs lately. It was a fat snake, now wonder he choked himself, he was quite heavy.

You are right, the eggs would have been next for sure or small chicks if there were any out there. I was a bit freaked out all day thinking that one was going to be dropping in on me. And when I just opened the chickens up I looked very carefully before I leaned to opened the door. I have to start paying more attention cause I could of brushed up against the thing and really hurt myself.

Oh when I woke my husband up from a sound sleep I am thinking that I screamed pretty loud. lol

sorry about the snake scaring the bejessesus out of you though, cause I feel your pain.

Be happy that you are able to scream, I can't when I'm so scared.

That was my morning yesterday! This morning a racoon in the trap that DH did not think we needed to set!

But the snake yesterday got all 10 of the eggs under my broody. Needless to say we moved the broody back into the main run this morning.....in her broody house so the hens can all look at her for a couple of days then we will get her out one night and put her on the roost.

Snakes are scary....dead or alive. And it is nice that the black snakes keep the copperheads away but there are always others to take over that job!

yes I am able to scream thank goodness. I usually will run the heke away and wind up hurting myself in the process. I hope that you don't see anything like this so you don't get scared.

Oh dear I am sorry! Wow good thing you got the DH to set the trap. Us chicken parents know that something is wrong. Oh I am sorry that the blasted snake got all of the broodies eggs. That is just not fair. Did you find the snake? Was it alive when you found it? A snake is a snake to me and they all are not my favorite things period. But I don't like to see something suffer and the snake I found most surely suffered.

Oh my! I'm new at this and I hope that's not what I have to look forward to. I am amazed at the issues I'm reading about on here with predators so I'm a little uneasy not knowing what we may be facing.

I agree with some of the others that a dead snake is the only good snake there is. I'm glad it was dead when you found it - I can't imagine finding one like that alive!

I woke up to a dead rosecomb juvenile in my coop. His neck was stretched out and his head and neck was all wet mucous and

I guess it was too large for the snake but it gave it a good go. Im wondering how to keep the snakes out of this huge old barn I have... I think that's pretty impossible. Does anyone know of a snake repellent?
