The last couple nights we had spotted a baby possum just outside the house. Today, there it was, napping in the trash not 8 feet from a brooder full of chicklets and juveniles. It must have climbed up the construction fencing that was leaning against the can and couldnt get back out. When we found it, it was curled up and sound asleep. I suggested that we just put a hose in the can and give it swimming lessons, but DD (the spider rescuer) won out, so she has driven it off to find it a new home. Im setting the trap now, cuz where there is one baby..... there are plenty more and soon they'll be big enough to kill my chickens and ducks. This one is tiny but the last couple that I trapped were the size of a cat. Now, where's that bag of marshmallows.....

Im a little embarrassed by how filthy that trash can is LOL. That is the one we keep next to the outside sink on the patio. We toss broken eggs in there and dump out dirty feeders from the brooder and cage trays, etc.

Trust me, it's already big enough to kill your chickens & ducks.
The reason you found it in the trash can is because they look for the easiest meal possible, probably smelled egg in the can.

Chel, I know a good spot in the middle of I-880 northbound that would make a good home (2nd lane from the left).

LOL, I know that spot! It would be perfect!! But Nooooooooo, she took it down to the River about two miles away.

Im sure you're right, rooster-red, I lost a fine fine silkie not too long ago to a nasty possum that wasnt even full grown.
Hey, maybe I should use eggs to bait the trap? Ive been using cat food and marshmallows.

Two of my teenage daughter volunteer weekly at a wildlife rescue facility close to our home, and they have a whole passel of baby possums that they are raising to let go in the wild. Amazing. My girls tell me that they have them under a lid to a small dog kennel and they all pile in there together and when you lift the lid up they all tumble down, with a lot of hissing and baring of teeth. Creepy little animals, but with a right to their lives when possible.

I think possums are some of the ugliest creatures... and so mean! I've always been an animal lover, but those things are really hard to feel sorry for! (And lord help them if I ever find them near my chickens!)

even though it looks like they do fine becoming road kill all by themselves.

You don't say:
