I don't look forward to the day I confront a predator but know it is probably inevitable where we live. I admire nature's predators but the confrontations where they meet our livestock, pets or even children can be grim or scary. The laws covering raptors are federal and extremely strict - I don't think there is any exemption allowing poultry keepers to defend their birds with lethal force. Good luck convincing anyone let alone a cop, that a hawk is a threat to your life. Not unless you have harpy eagles trying to snatch your toddler! Kentucky has had some rough incidents with bear confrontation, and the person who shoots a bear usually spends a night in jail and lots of $$ explaining themselves even in very convincing self defense instances. You better get some claw marks to show, hopefully just in your door jamb or a birthing cow, not your own body.
On a lighter note, give that hen a treat!!! Our little dinosaurs can surprise us sometimes.
