Guys, guys, guys....

It is NOT a great horned owl. It is also not an elf owl. It is a SCREECH owl. They come in two common color phases, rufous (red) and grey. They are very good at giving themselves concussions, too -- we used to get them in the clinic all the time after they would fly into things.

Thanks for taking care of this little guy!

If anyone else tries handling owls, beware of those talons. With hawks, you have to watch the beaks. With owls, it's the claws. Best to wear gloves!

I agree with the last poster, on screech owl
it is no way Great horned owl - they are much larger and would not have babies this time of year and they are close to full size when the fledge, GHO are huge!
what a cutie!

No doubt about it. It's a red phase Eastern Screech owl and they don't eat chickens. A few years ago I was sitting in my treestand bowhunting when a screech owl lit on a branch not 18" from my face. I thought it was so amazing to sit and watch him. It would stare at me, bobbing his head, leaning forward, watching, tensing up. Then it occurred to me that with my face painted in camo he was watching the white of my eye. Decided that maybe he was considering if my eye might be edible. That's when I decided that I had enough owl watching and shooed him away.

Nice, nice eastern screech owl. Probably was chasing a bug and glass looks clear to them. Most birds don't see glass as solid. They see glass as whatever it is reflecting. A neighbor lost a big pane glass window in their living room one year to a Cooper's hwak that was chasing a dove.

Those little guys are so cute. They're fun to listen to, also. They're not called screech owls for nothin'. Owls feathers are soft edged for silent flight, that's probably why he felt so cushy on your hand.
