LOOK WHAT JUST HIT MY KITCHEN WINDOW!!!!!!

We had a much larger owl, not sure what kind, hit our window around Christmas time and it was not so lucky. It super hard, and when it fell, huge sheets of snow and ice came down off our tin roof and finished him off, it looked like. Very sad. Huge gatorade-yellow eyes and those talons....whew! Makes me feel very sorry for any mouse (or chicken) that it happens to pick up.

That was/is a gorgeous Owl! In the second picture is looks just like a chicken

A juvenile GHO got one of my adult ducks. I'd not gotten the door shut well

and the owl flew in and grabbed the duck by the head. Have I mentioned what incredible grip strength these owls have? The talons of both feet penetrated the duck's skull and the owl could not let go. The duck was far too heavy to carry away, so the poor owl was trapped. It happened just shortly before I went out to let them out; the duck was still very warm and I'm sure it died instantly. The owl had made "angel wings" in the coop floor shavings trying to get away. I came back in the house for a heavy bath towel and went back out to release it. It was quite difficult to pry the talons out of the duck's skull (Have I mentioned what incredible grip strength these owls have?

) It was so beautiful, one could get lost in those enormous eyes. I cried like a baby over the duck, especially since it was my fault, but I certainly couldn't fault the owl; it was doing what it had to do to try and survive.

How incredible!!! Yes, an eastern screech owl indeed. I think owls are so very fascinating. Probably one of my favorite birds of prey. I have enjoyed reading the Guardians of G'hoole series with my son, which is about owls. We have a few varieties around our house, and I love listening to them at night. They are just amazing. What an awesome experience!!! Thanks for posting such lovely photos, and for taking care of the little creature.

I still can't believe I had the opprotunity to hold it in my hand. Had it been coherant you'd better believe i'd have left it alone! It was hanging upside down in my boxwood by one foot, just laying there. I started pulling on it's tail feathers trying to get a handle on it to pull it up and at first thought it was maybe a thrush or tohee because of it's coloring. I think my kids thought the house was on fire when I ran into the house with it saying "look girls, look what hit the window" to get it warm! It is pretty neat to live where we do. We have had some pretty awesome things come into our yard over the years, and caught on video or camera too. Like a flock of 30 or so wild turkeys, baby deer nestled under my rasberries, and several accidental birds like scarlett tangers and red breasted grossbeaks. And now an OWL. OH yeah and one of the grossest was in our creek, that I have only seen once in the 16 years we've lived here, Horsehair worms!! Supposed to be common around here, but was new for me, BLUCK! I wouldn't let the kids play in the creek till we found out what they were. They were harmless, thank goodness! I'm glad I posted the pictures so everyone could see it too. Thanks for all the supportive posts, in EVERY section of BYC! I LOVE THIS WEBSITE!!
