You can band them up to 250 pounds - he is far from that

you have lots of time if you do keep him to have him banded.

Are you giving him a bottle? or is he weaned (looks to be bottle baby size still). If you don't want to keep him as a pet, you could raise him up for the freezer - home raised beef is much better than store bought.

what other problems does he have? was he injured? or did Mama reject him?

steer calves (after they are banded and castrated) still make good pets - I have one who, while he is not a "pet" since he is destined for freezer camp - is the sweetest cow on the whole farm. He loves to be scratched and petted.

eta - I hope you didn't want that sheet back

He's 5 days old today. He was very weak when we brought him up, and as far as I know didn't get any colostrum from his mom, we tubed him some, but it was very close to the cut off time for it to benefit him. Not really sure what went wrong, his mom didn't reject him, and should still happily take him back. He's doing really well right now, he's bright and alert, and very currious about everything, the only problem is we haven't been able to get him to eat. If we can get him eating I think he'll be fine! And the plan is to give him back to his mom, if that doesn't work out he'll be a bottle (or bucket, whatever works) baby and I'll bet my dad will give him to me (I always get the problem babies).

He's really small, I think the second smallest I've had (mine or not).

He could be castrated and make a good pet! The only problem w/ that is I already have a pet steer and I was told NO MORE! So I'm not really sure what I'll do if I end up with him, we'll just have to cross that bridge when we get there.

awwwwww! Give him to me! Give him to me! I keep telling my DH I want a cow (I'm sure he'd be just a teensy upset that its a bull but not much lol) He's absolutly adorable but I think all cows are

Mine have to be "coaxed" to take that first bottle - usually by the second one they have caught on and realize it is food.

What I do is straddle them to hold them still, and put the nipple in their mouth and hold it there while they drink. I'll let up a couple of times, to let them A) breathe without a nipple in their mouth and B) see if they'll take it on their own. Usually you have to hold their jaw shut around the nipple the first time, though. It sounds cruel, but it is not. They aren't harmed at all, they just don't know what that bottle is and have to be convinced that it is a good thing.

If you've dealt with bottle babies before then I'm probably saying things you already know, so you can ignore me
