Ben Franklin wanted the wild turkey to be the National Bird, but the eagle has a more "noble" appearance. He didn't want the Bald Eagle because they have been known to eat carrion.

I know what you mean about not having a camera ready. 8 years ago I was driving in the National Grasslands north of here. About 50 feet from me would of been the pic of a life time. There perched on top of a dead sheep were 2 golden eagles and right behind them were 2 bald eagles. The goldens had been plucking the fleece and it looked like the birds were all standing in a pach of snow. It was spring and everything else was that pretty spring green. It really surprised me that they didn't fly away. I still carry that image with me and hope to get a chance to take a pic that would be close.
Sorry about your Mom. It's hard to loose a loved one but it sounds like you have a beautiful picture to remember her with.
