Looking 4 Good Roo Breeds

Our city addressed a complaint at the last council meeting. A rooster was crowing every morning at 4:15am, and the neighbor appeared before the council to ask what can be done. I live in the city limits in a small rural town in southwest Ga. We also have a lot of illegal immigrants that allow their chickens to "free-range". The city manager is considering banning roosters, but allowing people to have hens. We already have an ordinance that says the chicken coop or pen has to be 10 feet from any property line. Check your city ordinances to see what is allowed. If all else fails, go ahead and do it and maybe you will be "grandfathered" in.

My cochin rooster (so far!) is a good roo. He doesn't have a quiet crow, but so far he is not people aggressive and is not damaging his girls.

I had two roosters that I belive were orpintons. One was tiny and a jerk. He would poof out his face for me and looked like the scary lizard dinosaur from the 1st jurrasic park. He would also peck at me, and run at me. I tried to show him who was boss by kicking at him but he was just too mean. I had another that was bigger and he was fine. They were both the same age, raised together, etc. I think it depends on the rooster. I would look at the breed page and chose the one you like the most and who fits your climate the best. Maybe you could get a few and process the ones that turn out to be mean, you might get a better chance that way.
