looking after chicks really young chicks

I bought my feeders and waterers from TSC. I have them hanging in my coop. When the girls were little, one did fly up and get into the feeder, so I put a plastic plate on top of the feeder with a brick on top to keep it in place and so far none of the chickens have tried to get on it. I tie wrapped a D-ring onto the handle of the waterer, so it would hang better. I have them hanging on chains w/S-hooks. The one on the waterer would slide and the waterer would tip some and water would spill out. No more since I put the D-ring on... The handle on the feeder has an indent so the S-hook stays in place. Also with the s-hooks on chains, as they grew older, I could raise the feeder and waterer to reduce waste as far as the feed goes.

My coop doesn't have power either and I just raise them in the house. I got a bunch of large fish tanks real cheap when a local reptile store closed.

dog crates also work:

A harder crate with less mesh would work better than that one.

I prefer the aquariums because it's easier to see them, I can raise them up on stands, and it takes less heat since there is less ventilation. Being in the northern US it's always good when you don't need to run as much heat.

My husband wanted some chickens. He brought home several chicks in a box with a 5lb bag if chick starter. Now I had theses 2 day old chicks and had to makeshift a temporary brooder. Well I succeded and now have lovely hens. my girls are precious. We have had animals most of our lives and also inherited a dog from a daughter. Sadly the dog was recently put to sleep after 15 good years. I really did;t want any more animals as I plan on retiring soon and I wanted a break.

Thanks sooo much for all your great ideas. This forum is amazing.
