This afternoon, I found my Rode Island red dead. No sign of injury., and no sign of her being sick. She was very friendly and I could pick her up and pet her anytime. When I lift her up to check her well all over, a pale yellowish orangy liquid kept coming out of her break. I had never heard of sour crop, but after reading about it, I'm wondering if that was the problem. Is it contagious between chickens?

The only sure way to figure out why something died is to do a necropsy. You can send them in to be done but you can also do it yourself and rule out a few common causes if you know what to look for.

Sour crop is not contagious though. And leaking from the mouth could very well be normal assuming she had a crop full of food/water and you were manipulating the body just so. If she was not displaying any odd behaviors prior I would think it was something more like a heart attack or fatty liver leading to hemorrhaging of the liver and then death.
