I'm thinking of getting some silkies this summer and have been looking into other coops. I can't keep them with my ISAs because they don't have enough room in their coop for more chickens. I'm looking for a cheap but stable coop because I spent about $1000 on my last coop and I need to save some money. The run needs to be about 50 square feet because I only plan on getting 3-4 silkies and they can't free range. I also don't mind building a coop if you only have plans for one. Any ideas on how to get a coop like this, either from a store or plans to build one?

I bought a coop from TSC, supposed to hold 8 birds. In reality it will be good for 1, maybe 2 at most. That is if you don’t provide them a separate run. After a year it’s starting to fall apart. It likely won’t make it another year. It was about $300.

What I learned from store bought coops:
1. They are only good for 1/3 of the birds they say they will hold. If it says 6, they mean 2, If it says 12, they mean 4.
2. They are not weather proof. So expect about 2 years use unless you invest in improvements. Like painting it. I did nothing at all and now I’m having to find another option.

You can very likely build a better coop for the price you’d pay for one in a box. Also, you can repurpose just about anything for a coop. Old sheds are great.

Using elbow grease and some basic creativity would save you big time bucks. Plus the sense of pride and accomplishment outweighs in Merritt, the satisfaction of buying something manufactured.
Only basic tools will be required. @MillersFarm provided an interesting link to explore. Good luck with your endeavor & best regards.
