This Spring I will be getting chickens for the first time. I am VERY excited and I think I have figured out what kind I want and how many. My only problem is roosters. I have heard it's reccomended to get one even if you aren't hatching chicks and I do want a rooster. I wanted a domonique because I raised one this past Summer and he was very sweet and laid back. But towards the end he went through a phase where he attacked us repeatedly and things like that. We ended up getting rid of him. Our neighbors who we got him from also had another Domonique who did the same at a certain point and they got rid of him too.
I am looking for a kind of rooster who stays sweet and laid back all his life, and takes good care of his hens (they dont end up bald)
What kind of rooster do you have? Is he nice?

We currently have an Easter Egger rooster taking care of 19 girls, but that doesn't mean anything - Easter Eggers are crossbred, so their temperaments really do vary. Our guy though hasn't done a single wrong thing, and keeps his girls looking pristine.

Also, our Marans and Ameraucana roosters are perfectly good too. Most roosters are. Although I do think that you should mainly just have a rooster for breeding, as otherwise they just mate with the hens, make a lot of noise, and so on with no goal. Sure, they look out for the flock and do cute things, but other than that there are a lot of things they do with no purpose.

I think a Dominique would be fine. . . It's a better choice than Barred Rocks in most cases.

I have jersey giants who are huge but very gentle. My grandkids can go into the pens and pick the roos up Today my 9 year old grandson was walking around with one of them who weighs 17 pounds He really is an arm full but gentle as the day is long. I also have standard cochins. I find they are the gentlest breed around. One of my cochins actually raised 2 chicks when thier mother was killed. They were only 4 weeks old and he took over and raised them for us. I thought it was so sweet when he would call them over to eat just like their mother would. They both protect their girls but can still be handled very easily.

I so completely agree with Sugar S. Farms on the standard Cochin roos! We have a huge blue one & he's just like a big teddy bear! My 5 yr old girl grabs him up, loves on him, & carries him all over the yard! He looks to be over 1/2 her size! LOL He really is awesome & beautiful to look at too. Never been mean a day in his life. Good luck with whichever breed you decide to go with!
