I have done rehab in the past for many unwanted dogs. Many, I find, are primarily the result of bad owners. I have yet to come across a dog that was nasty because he was "bred" that way. I live in South Florida. It seems that there are MANY more bad dogs in te paper than there should be. My first question regarding any dog is what kind of excercise has it been given. More often than not, it's little to none. the 2nd? What kind of interaction is given to the dog on a daily basis.. More often than not..I/We work full tie jobs, the dog is left at home alone, in a crate, in the yard, in a room, in a house. ETC.
I am a firm believer in the fact that if you have a dog that is one of both spectrums.. aggressive or fearful.. exercise is extremely therpeutic for animal as well as the owner.
Take the dog for regular walks. if you can include other family members and make it a "pack" walk , even better. other dogs, either yours, or the neighbors makes for good company. No dawdling, or reading P-mai.. walk like you have a place to go and are late gtting there. If you are able to jog.. do that too.. You will find that this helps to release pent up energy and frustration. Make sure the dog is tired by the time he gets home. when the dog is laying down, relaxing/. then you reward him with a pet or a snack. Then walk away. It's VERY difficult for people that like to smoochy poo and cuddle their dogs, but we are going back to basics..
Another thing,, when disciplining your dog. one word, or a snap of the finger or the ACK sound is enough to get your point across. be firm. Too many words confuses the dog.
Body language is key. Over time, you will see the dog begin to relax and build confidence in himself. This sin't something that can be fixed right away. But, you should see a difference in about 7 days if you are consistant. Oh the walk should be at least for 30 minutes daily. If you don't have time, why did you get the dog? ( not being mean, just asking)

I find this feedback to be incredibly offensive, misguided, and it sounds to me like you've come to your own conclusions on this matter based on experiences you have that can lead someone to think I am a bad owner who is dumb enough to think that a dog does not require attention or regular exersice even though it is the first thing we are told and taught when we get one .

Where the hell did you read that I said I didn't have time for my dog? Where did I anywhere write that even though I've got the patience to work with him and train him, when it comes to excersise, pft what? Waste my time and energy on THAT DOG? are you kiding me? I don't even like that dog!

"My first question regarding any dog is what kind of excercise has it been given. More often than not, it's little to none. the 2nd? What kind of interaction is given to the dog on a daily basis.. Is this the conclusion you got with me writing that I have spent hundreds of dollars and hours working with my dog? That I have no time for him?

" What kind of interaction is given to the dog on a daily basis.."
uh...obviously none. i dont even look at the dog. dog? what dog? i hate dogs.

Why did I get a dog if I don't have time for it? Are you freaking kidding me? That subject never came up once in this post. Should I send pictures of his weekly hikes? His nightly walks? His daily swims in the summer time? Half the reason I got a dog is because we are very active people and we enjoy the company.

Your post has gotten my blood boiling. I'm not sorry for being rude. I am extremely offended and it obvious that you did NOT take the time to read this thread. If you had you would have been able to tell that we are great owners who have spent alot of time an money on our boy because we love him and care about him emmensely instead of making false accusations and giving self ritious advice.

i am shaking right now i am so angry. I guess i could have just taken your post with a grain of salt and told you "oh, no..he gets plenty of excersise, ive worked with him for years, hes doing great!", however its people like you, in my opinion, that make me not want to ask for advice ever again in a public format. Because without knowing a whole story, one can be accused of not caring properly for an animal, or leaving to its own devices its whole life, ignoring the dog, not wanting the dog, WHEN ALL I HAVE WRITTEN IS HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS DOG AND HOW MUCH TIME WE SPEND WORKING WITH HIM.

Okay guys, im sorry, i appreciate the advice and help but im gonna be done with this thread now. I had posted on here asking for advice not because i have not asked before or because im lost and stupid and ignorant, but because i was wandering about on byc one day and it had just occoured to me that maybe someone here on byc might have something to say that i had never heard before.

From now on i am just going to stick to talking to professionals in real life and only ask chicken-related questions here on byc. My dog is a touchy subject and is the biggest part of my life ( besides my boyfriend of four years) and im leaving him outta this forum from now on. dont want to say that he had to go to the vet and have people think its because i hadnt fed him in over a month.

so im butt-hurt, and im a jerk. its cool whatever. i can live with that. There are some really awesome people on this forum who have helped me with my birds and are continuing to "hold my hand" thoughout my first incubation and i appreciate that so much, but im honestly not ever going to ask for advice regarding anything other than that on this forum ever again.

Theres just way too many people who dont take the time to read. Im not the only one who has seen it either.

once again i apologize to everyone who told me things not to be know-it-alls, but to genuinely try and help. I am going to admit that i have never reacted this way before to someone on the internet that i have never met and will never pass through my mind ever again, but at this time, a nerve has been hit and im hot and angry and hurt and feel misunderstood and what i feel was put on my, in my life and opinion, is a very serious accusation to make about a pet owner.

Please don't allow this to ruin your time here. You have gotten solid advise here from more than one person. I am sure you can rehab the dog for the fear, and take care of the growling. Please let me know how its going. If you want to feel free to PM me for more information. I am not going to address the other person's comments, I think the comments speak well enough on their own.
