Looking for an I.D. on these two peachicks.

Hey Deerman and everyone else - how are you all? I've been gone a long time but I'm back and wow has BYC changed.

My peafowl all reproduced this season and seven new "babies" are running around everywhere. I was hoping Deerman and the other experts could help me to I.D. these two young peachicks. I think they are female by the lack of barring, possibly pied something or other, and I think they were babies from my India Blue female but I can't swear to it - I had taken some of her babies away and raised them myself for the first few weeks because the peahens were losing babies by taking them into the woods. Anyway, I'm posting some pics. The daddy could be any one of my three males - an Opal; a Blackshoulder; or an Emerald Spalding.

Ruth thanks foe asking, lot going on today, lad work bad so had MRI today. Don't feel to bad, but its not going away.

Mahonri - Hey there - long time no see, no talk, no post. LOL How are you? I've taken a long BYC break because I bought 16 wild Appaloosa horses this summer and have been busy taming and training them and had to take a break from egg and chick orders.

Deerman - I'm still praying for you. I'm so sorry you are having to go through all of that medical treatment but praying for good results. Thanks so much as always for your ID on my birds. You were spot on on their parents three years ago when I bought them as chicks. My Opal is a white eye. My BS is the dominant male and the only one I've seen actually mate with these females. He performed his strut and dance every day right in the courtyard outside my sunroom so everyone got to see his song and dance. The three girls would play their hard to get game and walk all around him acting like they didn't even see him and then one by one they would run up, squat, let him mate, and then go on about their day. It was quite a spectacular show every day for most of Spring. Another interesting thing is that two peahens actually laid and hatched two sets of babies.

ok so good odds the white eye chick is also split to opal..

few hints if you let your peahen hatch and raise their own chicks, feed them a medicated starter, real important if they are on the ground that early...untill a couple months old.

Thanks Deerman - you are always so helpful. I did have one peahen's babies all get sinusitis at a few months old and I had to take them from her and clean their nostrils with Listerine and I give 1/2 ml of Tylan 50 in the swollen area without lancing or draining and they all healed right up. I kept them in a pen to check on them and keep them warm until they were fully clean and clear and then I gave them back to her. It was kind of funny, at first she either didn't recognize them or wasn't going to accept them and was pecking at them but they obviously knew she was their mama and they weren't taking "no" for an answer so they kept running up to her and diving under her wings. Since there were three of them they had her outnumbered and she couldn't keep up with them. A couple of hours later, they were one big happy family again and she remained very protective of them. I'm going to post a picture of one of them that I also need help identifying it's color. It started out solid yellow and I thought that meant Black Shoulder but it's getting some odd coloring now. The mother is a purple.

I've also had adult peafowl get the same swollen face and I've used the Tylan 50 on them as well and it works first time. I didn't have any that had peachicks that got sick per se - they were just losing them to predators because they were taking them into the woods at night and I guess sleeping on the ground since the chicks were so young and coming back with one less in the morning. The one that lost all four of her first hatch got wise and on her second hatch (same season) she kept them in the yard and when they could fly enough she took them to the peafowl tree they all stay in in the back yard. I started with 6 peachicks three years ago - this season we now have 13 peafowl since 7 babies survived freeranging this season. I do, however, toss out medicated chick food for the babies until they are quite big so that is a great tip and seems to work.

Ruth sound like you did good..yes the tylan 50 works great. Trick it to get it early, before it get that hard seed in the sinus.

lot of peachick freerange , die from cocci...reason for medicted feed. Some areas are worst than others.

Sound like you other chick is a BS , if blue will have black specks, if BS purple brown specks....

Hey all - it's me again - here's my final "mystery" chick. I'm thinking a black shoulder but a blue or green or what? Mama is a purple and the other two offspring seem to be a boy and a girl India Blue. Here's some photos - I'm trying to ID the yellow, splotchy, and green one:



Here he/she is with the whole family, including the "adopted" male from another hen's hatch that took to hanging out with this hen when her babies hatched because his mama had already tired of him and wouldn't let him hang out with her anymore. This purple peahen sort of adopted him and he's been with them ever since.
