There are so many conflicting replies on here, from "good job doing what you could", to "that's horrible". My words are apparently not being read all the way through. I thought I wrote it so it would be understood, but apparently not, now it is out of hand and I feel attacked. I didn't know I was required to explain the entire backyard, fencing, etc... I just wanted to show the nesting box we threw together quickly, because it wasn't going to be permanent, and I was kinda proud of it.
Many years back, we had chickens in the same yard, no coop, no nesting boxes because we found them roaming the land when we moved here and brought them inside the fence because we worried about predators. We never asked HOW to raise them, no one ever interjected... we just enjoyed them, and they enjoyed us :) They were fine and they lived for approx 6 years.
So... Is there a way to just remove my original post/this thread and move on?
You can report it but I don't think that's necessary

I have read the rules :thumbsup

Sadly I've spent several minutes Searching to find the proper thread for finding hens to purchase or for free in SC and can't find specifics... I may be using the wrong keywords 🤷‍♀️ so I am making my own post/thread. I hope that's ok?!

I am looking for at least two young-adult laying hens near Irmo/Ballentine SC, free, or inexpensive. (no babies, no roosters)

I was promised two 2-yr olds by a neighbor, (that I have had contact with & fed while also caring for her dogs), so I spent the last two weeks getting the yard ready again (because we were going to get some a few years ago and it fell through), and plenty of $$. The person finally texted me back yesterday after I wrote them twice to ask when I could come get them... and they said their kid threw a fit  so this is no longer in motion. 😥

I live on the outskirts of Irmo, in Ballentine, on land. I am free to have yard animals here and have been craving having chickens again like we did when I was 17 and first moved here.

Nice to meet you all! 🐔

I recently got two buff orpingtons from them. The pullets are a fair price, but be forewarned that the shipping will be costly. If you need hens to be broody soon, I recommend them. If not, go with day old buff orpington or brahma chicks (like from Cacklehatchery.com or mcmurrayhatchery.com) and raise them. Both of those breeds make great mamas.

Your beginning post was obviously misunderstood. This website is here for people to teach and learn. Most of us have nesting boxes attached to the coop or right near it depending on weather. I think people on here are just trying to be helpful. No one was trying to attack you. We are all very passionate about the safety of our birds.

That being said, you mentioned you are in the process of trying to acquire a larger coop than what you have. If you take a picture of what you are using, and are open to suggestions, I’m sure there will be lots of helpful info on how to expand it for your needs. I don’t understand why you would hesitate to show us where your birds will be housed. If you really don’t think the coop is adequate, you should probably wait to try to acquire birds until you have the coop ready. You mentioned you were rushed because of the other chickens, but since you are not getting them you should have a lot of time to prepare before committing to get a new set of birds.
