My grandmother has a small, modest farm. She works hard on her garden and grows most of the vegetables her family eats. She knows that I love my chickens, so she asked if I could help her get some chickens because she really wants brown eggs for her family.

I'd like to really blow her socks off with some gorgeous SUPER brown eggs. I would be incubating these eggs and raising the chicks for her until they were ready to live at her home. I'd also be open to buying some chicks instead of eggs! The important thing is that as adults, the birds would lay beautiful dark brown eggs.

Please let me know if you have something really special. I'm looking for something that will bring her joy on her farm and some we both can take pride in raising.

hatching eggs will start to be available soon - if you get eggs rather than chicks you will KNOW what colour egg to expect from them.

Dark brown egg layers are traditionally Marans, Welsumers, Barnevelders, Penedesencas, so look out for them, but be aware that many hatchery strains have not been selected for the egg colour, and may lay very ordinary looking eggs, so you need to be careful when it matters, as it does to you. ChickenCanoe here breeds Penedesencas.

Well, I can't help on breed.. I am wanting the same thing. A friend of my granddaughter is giving her eggs away, gdaugjter says friend getz 1 dozen eggs a day. There beautiful dark brown. I am gonna contact friend and talk-ask questions. I want these.
When I get info, I will share

Marans lay the darkest eggs, black copper Marans of the different types of Marans lay the darkest. If you want the really dark eggs then get them from a breeder. They are though rather late layers and do not start laying until 7 to 8 months usually.😊

Hey there guys! I appreciate the advise on breeds, but I'm actually already familiar with what breeds to look for and why to go to a breeder. What I need help with is actually finding a good, honest breeder who has the egg color they claim they do, and who is willing to sell. ;)

Sorry! Try looking up the association for the breed(s) you want (fx, Marans Chicken Club), and see if there are local breeders in your area. Good luck!😊

@ChickenCanoe has Penedesencas.

Check out G-Bear Farms on Facebook. They're in OK. Amazing eggs, great packing knowledgeable breeders.

Mine are in the incubator now.
