Looking for Duck House ideas

I am in search of ideas for a new duck house-set up!! We live in Western Pennsylvania, it needs to be winter sturdy & rain sturdy! I have spent so much time & money on dumb tarps&ties. I see that I can buy plans and that is fine, but I want to hear from real duck owners & their advice/experiences. Thanks

Well, my daughter keeps her Black East Indies in her house. Yep, her house! She started out with Chester and Emma. Last year Emma hatched out 14 babies, and they live in the house too. Last week Emma hatched out 10 more and those will finally be living outside when it warms up. Her SO built a condo for Chester and Emma and they kept it in the living room. The ducks used it for a while, but they prefer laps and easy chairs. She has several plastic dog carriers and when she claps her hands the ducks split up and go into their respective crates. Then she takes them out for swimming, running around the yard, and generally stretching their legs. When she wants to bring them in she does the clapping thing again and they get back into their crates to go back inside. Those ducks are sleek, healthy, affectionate, and living in the lap of luxury. Here are some pics that I posted on another thread here a few days ago.










They have toys to play with, and 2 rock doves Terri rescued. The top picture is of Chester and his buddy Nappy.

This is mine. It houses 11 duck for the whole winter, I'm on ontario, Canada, and it seems like winter won't quit! It's 8x12 with a 14x10 run.

Looks very Pennsylvania weather sturdy! Did you make the blue print plans or buy them? I like the size, so that I could store their feed, & wood chips, toys, a chair to sit & visit, etc.

My wife and I drew up the plans, I was in construction for 4 years, and my wife is in architecture. With nest boxes and food and water in in its hardly big enough. I wouldn't put more than 15 ducks in it for sure! I store my food bags out side and its still quite small inside the "quack shack". I hope to finish it this spring once the weather is better, but if you have any more questions feel free to ask. my signature has more pictures.

Blooie, great report on the indoor ducks! Impressed with the hand-clapping. Nice!

Here is a photo of the outdoor duck house that turned out to be not warm enough for some of my runners. But it's really sturdy and water-tight. Only thing I would change is I would have the roofing extend farther out on the downslope side.



This photo does not show that this is a double-walled house insulated with perlite and vermiculite, because they do not mold. Also not visible is the three-panel plexiglass drop ceiling to improve the ability to manage air flow. There is a sliding door from the house to the veranda - the veranda is covered top bottom and sides with half inch metal hardware cloth. The space between the house and roof is also covered in half inch h.w.c. Doors and gates have keyed locks. You can see the fence charger on the left side of the house - when the ducks were in here at night we had two equine tape ribbons around the house and veranda.
