Looking for info on Orpingtons from BYC people

MissPrissy..I totally understand what your saying. I've been around many mean Roosters in my time. I do understand that any rooster cam potentially be mean. I'm just hoping with all of us raising them as chicks..they will all learn to respect eachother. I want them to be able to go collect eggs & help clean the coop without being attacked. I felt if I at least started out with a more dosile breed, I may have a better chance of this happening.

That being said, I'm amazed at how sweet my blue orp roo is.

And the girls are so soft and gentle, and lay lovely brown eggs every day for me.

I have four buff orp hens and one of them is seriously broody. They are fat, fluffy and very friendly. They love to take treats from my hands and are not mean to any of my other chickens. Nothing but good things to say about them. I'd love to have some lavendars.

none of my orps have gone broody! Not fair!

Other then that, I cant say anything but wonderful things about my orps. They are so sweet with all my kids and they lay everyday. I love having them around so much but they do get picked on since they are so laid back...hence...the orp house construction is underway just for them!

My favorite picture of my orps and my 8yearold by a photographer.

My BO roo was ornry.Had to get rid of him because he wouldn't stop attacking my kids and ME! Don't think it matters much breed wise just depends on the rooster but some are more prone to be aggressive and some not.My Cochin rooster (DUKE) is a for sure keeper!! The sweetest rooster we have ever had.He even protected my son when the BO rooster tried to attack him.Chased him away. I love him to pieces

They lay medium to large brown or light brown eggs. They often go broody, but not always. Ours are very adventurous and very friendly, and they are also calm and laid-back. I would highly recommend them for a first-time chicken owner. And they are very beautiful!

Have fun!

P.S. I don't know about roosters, but they may be aggressive and they may not, depending on how they are treated and raised. But hens are just the sweetest!

I second everything Miss Prissy said!
The hens are very sweet. My roo was too until he got old enough to figure out he is a rooster. My right hand has lots of scars from that brat.

Never leave a child alone when your rooster is free ranging. I had to save my granddaughter one day because she picked up her favorite Barred Rock. He came right after her, chasing her to the house.

I guess I'm just lucky none of my kids are real young or little. Besides the fact the chickens free run will still be restricted by a fence. If I do end up with a mean one...they will know to stay out till I get rid of it. Let's just hope I get blessed with a sweet one & then I won't have to worry about it...lol

We have blue, black, splash, and buff orps. We started out with several different types of chickens, but fell in love with the orps. We have since rehomed several of our original birds and now only have the orps, plus 2 of my original hens that I can't part with.

My orps are friendly and sweet, and not at all flightly or skittish. My roo respects me, as I respect him and I have never had a problem with him being aggressive at all.

Three of my hens have gone broody (just hatched chicks this past week). They are very consistent layers and lay nice, large, pretty brown eggs.

Just my humble opinion, but you can't go wrong with orpingtons.

I would say that BO's are as good a breed as any to attempt this with. Hopefully, you will wind up with a friendly roo. BO's are as good a gamble as any, IMO. Good luck.
