I am developing several different lines and will let you know when I get everything looking right and laying the correct egg color.

Hi Debbie

Yes, I tried for a couple of generations and got the color in the roosters but not in the females. I ran out of pens so passed the project onto someone else and they tried and got the same results. I know from previous breeding that it's easy to transfer the gold using a wheaten but not so much from the black copper. That is why this breeding to a salmon will be so interesting.

Hi

That is an interesting picture. At a guess, I would say that the black copper that was used was carrying the wheaten gene. The reason for this is all the gold on his breast.

One of the important things when breeding for different colored birds is firstly to know what genes your birds are carrying as much as possible.

I have some beautiful Golden cuckoo breeders. Some are not feather shanked, others are. I love them to death

Their goofy characters are depicted in their photos. I have Black Copper, cuckoo, and silver cuckoo as well. These are my favorite chickens and my prized babies

The last cockerel shown, whilst a pretty bird, is not the correct colour pattern. He is actually a silver/gold split whereas he should be homozygous gold. He also carries unwanted mahogany indicated by the dark red irregular patches. My guess he has been bred using Cuckoo & Brown-Red (Black Copper) birds.

Mahonri - Yeah, I wish Las Vegas were closer to Phoenix so that I could take you up on test hatching and stuff. You should definately let me know if your ever coming my way!
