Looking for others who set eggs 6-13-15 to join me

Exciting news! 2 chicks hatched this morning. 6 more have pips. They started last night. I didn't think I would get Molly to bed but she finally went. She got up at 6am and caught the first hatch on video. Better finish that coop.

That is a great experience for a child. Mine are sitting in lockdown and I'm sitting on my hands.

What's that song, the waiting is the hardest part?

My one broody is hatching out about one chick every other day. She doesn't take care of them since she is still sitting. The poor chicks run around the coop to the other 4 broodies trying to find a mommy. They all just sit tight. I've been coping them up and putting them in my brooder with several that hatched last weekend. They are Swedish Flower Hens and I haven't hatched many this year, so I'll raise them for now.

Love it, which came first, the chickens or the coop?

In so many cases it's the chickens! It's so easy to procrastinate thinking "I have at least 5 weeks before I need the coop....'

Been there, done that. Several times. And again. Now.

This is fun. We all have chicks hatching. Yes, time to warm up the brooders everyone. I'm going to try a chick cave. Has anyone else done that? It's a heating pad over wire to keep the chicks warm. I am leary of having a heat lamp in the house. Hope it stays warm enough.

My house doesn't have ac. It's always warm this time of year. I use a 60 or 100 watt regular bulb.

Actually, I think it's a halogen and 53 or something like that. I forget what I tuck in there. I don't get excited about temperature. If they let me know they are cold, I lower it, if they are warm, I raise it. Over the last few years I've realized they are very adaptable and sturdy, so I no longer follow " the rules " on a lot of things.

5 chicks hatched now. All Seramas. We moved 3 into the cave and they seem happy. There are 2 eggs that some how got half of a hatched shell stuck to their pipped end like a hat. Anyone ever have this happen? I tried to gently remove it but it's on there pretty tight. I didn't want to break the shell. Suggestions?

That is weird! Did you get the shells off yet... you just need some moisture up under there. Congrats on the chicks!

I am still waiting on my quail eggs to do something. I put an egg in my hand and I think there is some movement so I am pretty sure something is going on in there! I would hate to be waiting on eggs that never even developed ; ) In any case, I have some Silkies a few days behind them.

Great news! All 12 of the eggs hatched. 10 Seramas and 2 Silkies. 1 Serama that had a shell stuck to the end needed assistance getting out. It had zipped the shell but wasn't able to push it off. We waited 28 hours from when it pipped. It is the weakest of the chicks and struggles to stand. Still, it looks better than it did earlier so I hope she will be okay. All the others look really healthy and strong.
