Looking for shade ideas for my chicken run. I got 3 new hens ISA browns, for eggs until my 3 month old Brahma get older and start laying, and they kicked all of my Brahma (25 of them) out of the coop. They are currently In a dog crate inside the coop to keep them from attacking the Brahma. I would love to let them out but they are taking over the coop, which is the main source of shade right now. We have fruit trees, but they were only planted last fall, so they aren’t large enough to give much shade yet. I added an a-frame made of pallets with a tarp over them, but it’s barely large enough and they get cranky when squeezed together. I’m looking for creative ideas for additional structures. I have bamboo galore on the property, and am planning a structure or two from that, but would also like some other upcycle/free/cheap fun ideas. I tried looking for any little tykes playhouses/structures, but no one is selling any used ones near me atm. Preferably not permanent, their coop is mobile and the run is poultry netting, so they will eventually move somewhere else.

You can do a shade triangle. Attach one side to the coop and the other two to 4x4's you put in the ground. Or use other fabric for a shade structure using poles or existing buildings. Or you can spend a little more and make a shelter using cattle panels. We made a quad garage out of cattle panels and it's lasted with the same tarp for 3 years now. ???? Remember you get what you pay for. The cheap ends up expensive sometimes! Good Luck :D

In plant nursery supplies you’ll find permeable shade cloths with varying degrees of shade. They allow air and water to pass through, so, when properly anchored (which can be accomplished creatively) are fairly impervious to wind.

Harbor Freight has really cheap tarps, we added grommets to one to make it the right size to hang in the roof of our run. One thing is, if you're in a place that gets really warm in the summer, maybe go with the silver tarp. We bought a green camo tarp because it was small and it got really hot because of its dark color. They also have just the shade mesh ones.

We use a tarp on part of the run. It helps with the rain also. I know tarps dont hold up but it was only $5. I also have their coop raised to provide deep shade also.
