Hello everyone, my name is Kenia and I live in Mexico City. I was fortunate enough to spent 3 and a half wonderful years with a Muscovy Duck (I always thought she was a Muscovy Duck). His name was Pato. I have come here in search of this community's help. I lost my duck on Sunday and I don't understand why. She was a healthy duck, she ran, she ate, she played, she was happy, but one day I noticed she looked kind of down but I thought maybe it was one of her moods and the fact that she still ate and wagged her tail, however the next day I found her breathing through her beak and I took her immediately to the vet. The vet told me that my duck's lungs didn't sound right and she gave her some antibiotic and Bach flowers to strengthen her defense system. I made sure at night that my duck was warmer than ever. The next day while I was cleaning her place I noticed she was breathing even heavier and in a couple of minutes she stopped breathing and I found her dead.
My questions are many.
Can someone tell me what my duck had? I just feel as if somehow it was my fault.
This was my first duck and I would like to know how did you went through the loss of your first feathered friend.
Any advice on what I should do to cope with my grief?
Thank you.
I attach a photo of my duck.

Aww, she was adorable. I'm sorry to hear you lost her. Muscovy generally are healthy long lived ducks. Without a necropsy it can be almost impossible to guess what was wrong with her. Sounds like you did your best to help her get better. It is hard to lose a pet of any species.

Pato was beautiful, thank you for sharing some pictures.

@oldhenlikesdogs makes a good point that a necropsy would be the way to id what went wrong. You did the best you could, try not to blame yourself. We all lose animals at some point and it's never easy. Sounds like you gave Pato a good home.
