Hello all!
I am Melissa. My husband and I are new to chickens. Getting ready to build our coop. Have read the book but I'm sure we will have questions as we go. We live in TN in the middle of nowhere. The chickens will most likely be free range to help with ticks etc, unless we have issues with predators. We do have 3 dogs, so hoping that thy leave the chickens alone and keep predators away.

Start working with your dogs as soon as the chicks arrive to train them that they are not toys but family members. That will go a long way towards the dogs learning to be flock guardians.

Hello, Melissa, and welcome to BYC. When building your coop include a pen/run. I agree with free ranging in some form, but predation will happen, and a secured pen will be required upon occasion.
