Looks like buff orpington from bin marked 'mixed large breeds"?

so is everyone saying those five chicks in the picture are buff rocks??

I am sorry but yellow legs are buff rocks. If those are hatchery chicks call and get a refund.

For 2 reasons -

1. If they are orpingtons and have yellow legs that is considered a major defect in the breed. Those are to be culled from breeder stock.

2. They are buff rocks and not buff orpingtons therefore you didn't get what you paid for.

A yellow leg and feet is not an orpington and it won't turn white when they age.

well all five have white legs and feet now,and I raised them here and I dont think the hens would be too happy if I put them back

Thanks for the pics Skeeter! If you get a chance I'd enjoy seeing current pics? Figuring yours are about 2 months old now?

My mystery chick came from Ideal Poultry is all I know, and is a large breed.

It well could be. All 4 of the mixed large breeds, as I recall, one was positively identified as a Barred Rock by the resident "chicken girl" (as they fondly called her at the feed store). Maybe they were all 'Rocks'? They did tell me they came from Ideal Poultry and marked as Mixed Large breeds... so it's all I've got to go on besides her looks.

The thing with leg color, is my inexperience. I see a little pale yellow tinge, but in person her legs more simular to the palm of my hand. I've not seen a BO leg in person and it sure seems hard to tell in pictures thus far.

Your experience is appreciated! I'll post new pics till we figure her out.

Oh wow! White Rock, that has been a consideration of late. But yet another breed to consider? I know nothing of red-sex link, except that vaguely recall sex-links can be sexed by color on hatch day?

Glad to hear that they can 'feather out' one color and then turn another. Learned something new!

I've been wondering about the creamy white wings coming in... I still hope she's going to be buff since I like the buff color alot. AND we have hawks. figure that white stands out more than other colors.

But then I thought it was strange that my Black Orpingtons first wing tips came in white. The rest came in black and now her/his back feathers are definately irredescent green (very cool!). I guess I don't mind if any of mine aren't true to breed standard really since they aren't for breeding.

Not that it matters at this point.. I'm attached to all four, even my suspected Roo! (who is nice so far!) I don't know how that will work out... wasn't planning on having a Roo... one more thing to figure out... lol!

Adorable photos! Little chicks are SO cute aren't they? I have to guess the ages of 3 of my 4 cause I got them from the feed store. Maybe they knew but I forgot to ask.

How old is your BA's now? You have three BA's?

My one BA is I'm guessing about 5 weeks old. Came from a straight run and is the first chick I got. Took my chances and crossed my fingers, cause I wanted the chance to raise a BA hen. I'll post pics soon and hopefully I'll know soon if Stella is actually a Fella, so I can figure out what to do.

Stella/Fella's comb is turning pinkish at the base. From what I've read that's one of the first signs... but I really don't have a clue..... Call me crazy, but my mind will try to justify that it's OK to keep a Fella around to protect the 3 girls.... but I don't want fertilized eggs... and don't want to maintain separate quarters.. .. maybe I'm worrying for naught. Sorry, I'm just rambling now ... I'll take pics later today and post a new thread on it....

I have 20 BA hens that are 9 months and the 2 chicks together are about a week old now and were adopted by a broody BA hen. It was the only way I could break her broody.

It is nice to know that some buff orp chicks leg color changes after a few days because I was getting seriously worried
